It’s now marriage: impossible for one of Hollywood’s most famous couples. Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes divorce after five years, and the split raises one major question-- how will Suri be affected?

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes split. The couple have been married for five years and have a six-year-old daughter, Suri, together. The split was confirmed by Katie’s lawyer Jonathan Wolfe:

“This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family,” Wolfe said in a public statement to People magazine. Rumours about the state of their marriage have been rife in recent months and Holmes was notably absent for her ex-husband’s latest film premiere of Rock of Ages in Los Angeles earlier this June.

An unexpected divorce?

The divorce marks an abrupt, but not totally unexpected end, to one of the most high profile unions in Hollywood. The relationship first came to light in 2005, when Katie was first seen by Tom’s side as he went on a worldwide tour to promote the film, War of the Worlds and later that year it was confirmed that Katie was pregnant.

Their daughter, Suri, was born in April 2006 and subjected to intense media scrutiny. Tom and Katie tied the knot in a lavish wedding held in an Italian castle in November 2006.

First for Katie; third for Tom Cruise

The marriage was the first for Katie but the third for Tom, who was previously married to actresses Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman. Cruise said he was ‘deeply saddened’ that Katie had filed for a separation, and he was now concentrating on his three children.

Cruise has two adopted children Connor and Isabella with ex-wife Nicole Kidman. Katie, aged 33, filed the divorce papers from 49-year-old Cruise on Thursday after it had been reported that she was unhappy in the marriage in recent years. The former Dawson’s Creek actress is seeking custody of the couple’s six-year-old daughter Suri, in what could turn into a drawn out legal battle.

Another one bites the dust

The pressures of the limelight seem to have taken their toll on Tom and Kate’s marriage. But it is still too early to say how the divorce will affect the children, but Tom is no stranger to domestic shake-ups. It appears the saga is just beginning and could develop into a show more engrossing than any of Tom’s blockbuster films.

Food for thought: Now, will Suri be more spoilt? Both parents might be trying to gain her to favour –therefore both might try to out-do the other by lavishing Suri with anything and everything she wants.
