Time's Top 10 Toy Craze

31 Dec, 2009

Time's top ten list of toys that had taken over kids all over the world this last decade.

Zhu Zhu Pets

Zhu Zhu Pets

These toy hamsters can squeak and squeal just at the push of a button. You have a choice of bringing home either Chunk, Pipsqueak, Squiggles and Numnum.
Bratz Dolls

Bratz Dolls

Little girls used to love Barbie dolls but as soon as the Bratz dolls were released, it was bye-bye to the former reigning queen of fashion dolls. The four original Bratz dolls are Sasha, Yasmin, Cloe and Jade. They are multi-racial and exude lots of street attitude making them very appealing to all kids. A lot of parents just didn't like them because these pouty lips dolls are way "too adult" for little girls.
Furby

Furby

Furry little electronic toys with big eyes and blinking lids. These painfully cutecreatures look like Gremlins but they're lovable because they squak in kiddie gibberish, make gurgling noises and sing new songs.
Tamagotchi

Tamagotchi

Virtual pets that teaches kids to be responsible pet owners. The quality of these toys are very low - cheap plastic casing and low-tech LCD - but kids just love them.
Tickle Me Elmo

Tickle Me Elmo

This toy is designed after the adorable Sesame Street character. It can giggle and vibrate with laughter making it truly a delight to look at. It became an instant hit, with parents clamoring to get buy some for their kids.
Beanie Babies

Beanie Babies

These are tiny bean bag toys with funny names. Kids loved these toys so much that some of them became Beanie Babies collectors.
POGs

POGs

The game was first invented in the 1920's but was revived by a Hawaiian schoolteacher sometime in the 90's. He used cardboard disks and dubbed them as POGs after the famous Hawaiian concoction - passion fruit, orange and guava. It's amazing that this game was big hit considering that it is very simple.
Cabbage Patch Kids

Cabbage Patch Kids

These dolls are different from the usual dolls that we see in toy stores as they have large, round heads that are made of vinyl. Their bodies are made of soft fabric making them really huggable.
Rubik's Cube

Rubik's Cube

Probably one of the best-selling toys in history. Every year, more than a dozen contests are held all over the world for those who want to solve this this brain-scrambling toy. Infact cubing is so popular in Singapore that Mr Eric Chung, whose business CJ 917 Trading is the sole distributor of the original Rubik's Cube in Singapore, says sales of the bigger cubes are between 500 to 1,000 every three months.
Pet Rocks

Pet Rocks

Unlike Tamagotchi, pet rocks do not require a lot of attention and care. The idea of having rocks as pets is really silly but amazingly a lot of of people were hooked to it. Pet Rocks even came with training manuals so pet owners would know how to care for their new inanimate pet - which were selling at less than $5 US dollars a piece.

Is your kid crazy about a certain toy? You might want to add that to this list.
