After being on maternity leave for three months, Adrienne Kromer decided it was time to go back to work. So she dropped her daughter at Sharon’s Day Care in Lehigh Township, Pennsylvania.
It was three-month-old McKenna Rose’s first day at the daycare and also her last: she would be long dead before the day ends.
According to Yahoo!, McKenna was left unsupervised while she was napping for almost half an hour.
“When the employee returned to the room, she said the infant was unresponsive and her lips were blue, according to the removal order,” the report said. “The employee alerted a coworker, who called 911 while the employee administered CPR.”
They rushed the baby to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
This launched an investigation into the operations of the daycare; three days later the day care was shut down.
The order said that the daycare should have had more people supervising the children based on their ages. the investigation also revealed that McKenna was also left alone for “several periods throughout the day.”
Another violation of the daycare included letting McKenna sleep on her stomach.
The Department of Human Services said that Sharon’s Day Care was shut down due to “gross incompetence, negligence and misconduct in operating a facility likely to constitute an immediate and serious danger to the life or health of the children in care.”
“I’m not sure how we are supposed to go on,” McKenna’s father said. “There’s no reason why a 3.5 month old healthy baby girl should have lost her life yesterday.”
He also said that he daughter appeared to be fine, “no signs of illness or distress” when her mother dropped her off at the day care.
Throughout the day, Adrienne called three times to see how she was doing, and each time an employee assured her that her daughter was fine.
