In a significant move to improve youth mental health care, Singapore’s Ministry of Health (MOH) has announced three key initiatives aimed at expanding access to mental health services and reducing stigma. These efforts, coupled with a new national helpline, aim to provide timely support for young people facing mental health challenges.
Singapore to Enhance Youth Mental Health Support with New Initiatives
1. Parental Consent Guidelines
New parental consent guidelines will be introduced to help youths seek mental health support more easily. While final details are still in progress, these guidelines are expected to simplify the process for young people to access professional help. The framework will balance parental involvement with the need to empower youths to make decisions regarding their mental well-being, particularly for those who may face difficulties in seeking consent at home.
2. Wellness Centre at SCAPE
A dedicated wellness centre will open at *SCAPE in Orchard Road, a vibrant youth hub known for its focus on creative arts, lifestyle, and social initiatives. The centre will serve as a safe space where young people can access mental health resources, participate in workshops, and connect with trained counsellors. By offering informal support in a welcoming environment, the centre aims to reduce stigma and encourage conversations about mental well-being.
3. 24/7 Youth Crisis Facility
To ensure immediate help for youths facing urgent mental health challenges, a new 24/7 crisis facility will be established. This round-the-clock service will provide emergency intervention, safe spaces for de-escalation, and access to mental health professionals. The facility aims to offer swift support during critical moments, ensuring that vulnerable youths have a lifeline whenever they need it.
National Mental Health Helpline and Textline (NMHHT)
In addition to these initiatives, MOH will launch the National Mental Health Helpline and Textline (NMHHT) in mid-2025. Staffed by trained counsellors, the helpline will operate 24/7 to provide immediate support for individuals in distress. The textline option especially targets youths who may feel more comfortable expressing their feelings through written communication.
Strengthening Mental Health Support for Youths
Singapore to Enhance Youth Mental Health Support with New Initiatives
These initiatives reflect Singapore’s commitment to nurturing a supportive environment for youth mental well-being. By improving access to care, creating safe spaces, and providing round-the-clock support, MOH aims to break down barriers that prevent young people from seeking help.
With these resources in place, youths struggling with mental health issues will have greater access to timely, compassionate, and effective support.
