How to spot fake formula milk from Johor Baru

12 Dec, 2017
How to spot fake formula milk from Johor Baru

This article gives you useful information on how to spot fake formula milk after the Johor Baru issue. Read on for more...

We’re all shaken up about recent reports of fake formula milk from Johor Baru, especially since many of us make the short trip from Singapore to JB to buy formula at a cheaper price.

It’s now been confirmed that the brand being mimicked is Enfagrow A+ (Mead Johnson).

In a Facebook post, Enfagrow A+ Malaysia said the only affected product is the Enfalac A+ Step 1 in 1.8 kg boxes, that include three foil packs in each box.

They’ve also alerted parents about how to identify these counterfeit packets of formula milk.

Fake formula milk: How to identify?

According to Enfagrow A+ Malaysia, here’s what you need to look out for, after closely examining each individual foil pouch.

  • Genuine Enfalac A+ Step 1 pouches look slightly puffy.  The fake packets are tight-fitting to the powder.
  • The fake pouches have very sharp creases on both sides, that are absent in genuine packets.

A tip from a person who commented on the post is to use the myfitnesspal app to scan the product on the spot. This should reveal if the product is the genuine brand or not.

So far, 210 counterfeit packs of formula have been discovered.

They were only sold in Iskandar Puteri, Taman Mutiara Rini, Taman Orkid, and Taman Nusa Bestari, says a Channel NewsAsia report.

“An extensive market search has confirmed no suspect product except for this specific packaging format in this limited geographic area,” said Mead Johnson.

However, the company also states that they are still investigating in order to “to completely eliminate their [fake formula] presence.”

The statement by Mead Johnson also confirmed that Malaysian authorities were working to catch those behind the counterfeit operation and bring them to task.

What should you do if you purchase a pack of fake formula milk?

Here what you should do, according Enfagrow A+ Malaysia’s statement:

If consumers find pouches of Enfalac A+ Step 1 1.8 kg with such creases in product that they have purchased, they should immediately contact the Mead Johnson consumer care line at 1-800-88-3585 (Monday-Sunday 9.00am -9.00pm) to report their concern and receive replacement product.

If consumers have Enfalac A+ Step1 1.8 kg product that is no longer in the original packaging, they can also contact us for replacement product.

We hope the Malaysia authorities are successful in their search to catch the counterfeit formula milk operators.
