10 Uniquely Singaporean WhatsApp Convos Mums Have

The rise of the virtual age has undoubtedly brought with it the rise of techno-mums. We’re sure many of you mummies out there are well-versed in the language of emoji and WhatsApp slang. On top of being a techno-mum, being Singaporean definitely adds a unique touch of its own.

Here are 10 uniquely Singaporean WhatsApp convos mums have! Let us know which ones you relate best with.

1. School Loops

1. School Loops

Being Singaporean means that you understand the importance of a good education, and a good early education at that. You’re the kind of mum who is in just about every school-related group chat that there is. Being in the group chat ensures that you’re being kept up to date on your child’s school life.

That test coming up on Tuesday? You know about it. The kid who has been down with dengue? You’re covered. The excursion to the Botanical Gardens? Time to pack the insect repellant.

Basically, nothing gets past you - especially when it comes to your little one’s time in school. Only the best, right?

2. The Family Chat

2. The Family Chat

Unlike our more Westernised mummies, there’s something about being Asian that means we rely on family a little bit more. We don’t move out just because we’re 18 and we certainly don’t forget that baby’s Grandma, also known as our own mothers, offer some of the best advice we can get.

While we may toss aside some of the old wives’ tales and the superstitions, we know that mum will always be there when we need a helping hand. Therefore, the family group chat is of utmost importance when it comes to being a young mum. How else are we supposed to get in touch? Praise the era of instant connectivity!

3. Fitness Chats

3. Fitness Chats

Being a mum certainly doesn't mean that you stop being a woman. You don’t stop being a woman who loves her body and can’t help but be a little vain sometimes. You’re the kind of mum that remembers her pre-baby body and isn't afraid to work hard to get it back!

This means that you’re going to be tied into more than just one fitness chat. The world is changing so quickly and everyday people are conducting new studies and coming up with new exercises to tone up and beat the flab. You aren’t about to take the risk of falling behind!

4. Distance Debate

4. Distance Debate

Oftentimes, being Singaporean means that we forget how small the island we call home really is. Bedok to Jurong seems like just too much effort and time that you don’t have - despite our transportation system being one of the best in the world.

You want to take advantage of how small Singapore is, and the efficiency that comes with living in such a country. Chances are, you have a decent daycare centre or primary school barely a stone’s throw from where you live or work. What you need now, is a mummy group chat with suggestions and recommendations of the best school’s and centres in your area.

5. Let’s Talk Tuition

5. Let’s Talk Tuition

As we’ve mentioned, as a Singaporean mummy, you understand how beneficial a good early education really is. Therefore, we can guarantee that you’ll be harnessing the powers of technology to enable you to find the best tuition centre available to your child.

What better reviews exist than that of fellow mums who have tried and tested what’s on the market?

6. New Mums

6. New Mums

Being a new mum can be tough, you’ll find your tiny terror has suddenly taken over your life. There’s the breastfeeding, the weaning, the night feeds - what’s a mum to do? This is where your phone comes in handy. It provides the best means of support you could hope to ask for. We can’t stress enough the benefits technology has brought with it.

Plus, we know our Singaporean mummies love to lend a listening ear and a piece of advice. There’s no better way to blow off some steam or solve a problem, than with the help of another mum who has faced the same issues.

7. Safety Woes

7. Safety Woes

Let’s face it, Singaporeans are a little bit paranoid (cue ‘kiasu’). Being a little bit paranoid when it comes to your baby, however, can be a good thing. You’re the mum who isn't taking any chances when it comes to keeping her little one safe.

You’re blowing up the chats with questions about the latest baby toys, potential choking hazards, and whether or not they’re safe enough. You’ll also be found dropping links to news articles on products that have been recalled due to safety hazards.

8. Domestic Help

8. Domestic Help

In Singapore, many of us are slaves to our jobs. This can be extra hard on mums, since on top of work, you’ve got to be there for the family as well. It’s times like these where you have to stop and remember that it is okay to ask for help!

Singaporean families employing domestic helpers is certainly not a new concept. However, you’re going to need one that can help take care of your baby when you’re out running an errand or stuck in the office - you need someone you can trust. This means, you’re most likely to get the advice of another mum and the agency she used! Some agencies train domestic helpers in basic childcare and CPR, skills that you’ll want your helper to have.

9. Down And Dirty

9. Down And Dirty

Similar to any safety woes you may have regarding your child’s playthings, you might find yourself tempted to rush your babe to the clinic at the faintest sign of a fever. However, since this isn't the most feasible of plans, you might find it easier to join a group chat on WhatsApp.

When it comes to your little ones, no holds barred. No matter how odd discussing the colour and texture of poo might sound, once you’re a mum it’s a whole different ball game. Instead of panicking and rushing to the GP, try hitting up your WhatsApp group. We’re pretty sure you’ll find other mommas who share your worries and can help settle those frazzled nerves.

10. Babies Of The Year

10. Babies Of The Year

We’re not sure if mums in other countries do this, but we’re pretty sure this is something you Singaporean mums can relate to - group chats for babies born in a particular year. This helps keep you up to date on all the happenings in the parenting world. Everything from baby products to daycares to health concerns you might have. The best part is, you’ll be growing and experiencing milestones with other mums and their own babies.

Your one-stop when it comes to staying in the loop on the what’s what for your child. Perhaps you’re the mum who just can’t bear the idea of technology, but still wants to keep updated. We think this is the solution for you, you don’t need the stress of keeping up with 100 chats when you can have one good source.

There you have it...

There you have it...

10 uniquely Singaporean WhatsApp conversations and groups mums have. It’s always more comforting to know that you’re not alone in something. This being especially true when it comes to parenting.

Sure you can always talk to your spouse, but there’s nothing like the bond between a mum and her little one. That’s why we know how good it is to be able to talk to other mums who are going through or have gone through what you might be facing.

We say embrace technology, it certainly has made our lives easier in at least one way!
