When you send your child to a daycare centre, that’s exactly what you expect – your child to be cared for during the day whilst you are unable to due to work or other commitments.
However, these parents made a very unpleasant discovery on Monday (31 December) when they arrived at Candyland Childcare Centre in Ang Mo Kio to pick up their twin children.
Mr. Eric Tang, was appalled to find that his 2-year-old daughter had cuts and bruises on both her cheeks and lip along with abrasions on her back. He said that he had asked the supervisor what had happened and if he could take a look at the CCTV footage.
Bruises across her cheek and lip on the first day.
Mr. Tang’s frustrations grew when the supervisor informed him, that it was suspected that his daughter had been beat up by an older boy who was also enrolled in the centre. Additionally, the centre did not have a CCTV system set up.
After returning home, with his two children, Mr. Tang received a call from the same supervisor he had spoken to earlier – who now claimed that his daughter had fallen and injured herself on her own.
You can only imagine how enraged Mr. Tang felt at this point. The parents then took their child to a clinic for to have a doctor take a closer look at their daughter – who confirmed that the injuries the girl had sustained did not look accidental.
Bruises can be seen more clearly on the second day.
Still feeling disturbed by what happened to their daughter, Mr. Tang and his wife took their daughter for a second check up later that day at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital.
Mr. Tang said that, “It is not logical that a fellow toddler is capable of such abuse. Look at the extent of her injuries.”
The added factor that the centre does not possess a CCTV system has clearly further aggravated Mr. Tang and his wife. The Early Childhood Development Agency, responsible for regulating the early childhood sector say that the matter is currently being investigated.
We tried to get in contact with the centre, but failed to get through – their website has also been taken down.

How can you keep your child safe?
Childcare centres are supposed to be a place where can rest assured that your child is being taken care of whilst you are away at work. You expect that your child being treated well, fed and kept safe.
Take your time when selecting a centre for your kids!
The last thing you would want is for your child to be neglected and thus; suffer injuries, be picked on by other children or worse, be mistreated by supposed caretakers.
Whatever the case may be, in the above-mentioned story, we would like to take this chance to advise parents to be careful when selecting a childcare centre.
Talk to caretakers about any concerns you may have.
If possible, visit the school first – take the time to speak to caretakers and see how you feel about the environment. Bring up any queries you feel you have – matters such as if the centre has a CCTV system, the number of caretakers that are around at any point of time along with other concerns you have.
As a parent, it is natural to be a little anxious when leaving your child with someone else. Most childcare centres are aware of this and will be happy to entertain and put any worries you have to rest.
