6 Singaporean men reveal how they proposed

Is romance just a fiction of our imagination? Does it only exist in Nicholas Sparks books and in the movies? Are Singaporean men really as unromantic and boring as we all say they are? Or are we not giving our male counterparts the credit that they deserve?

Ladies, we know that we are all guilty of sharing our proposal stories among our girlfriends, and giggling and "aww"-ing at how it all happened. The excitement, the suspense when he takes you to somewhere fancy, and even the jitters you get every time he opens his mouth to say something to you. But have you ever wondered how these men prepared for this big day? What preparations were involved, or how he felt when he was about to pop the question?

We spoke to 6 Singaporean men to find out how they had proposed to their partners, and what went through their minds while doing so! Read on to find out!

"Mine is kind of a funny story, because her parents had accidentally told her about it! I had gone over to her place while she was out at work one day, and asked her parents for permission. They were undoubtedly happy, as we had been dating since we were in secondary school. That night, my wife-to-be called me and asked, "Sayang! You're marrying me?!?!" and I freaked out. How on earth did she find out?! A few moments later, her mum had called me and apologised, admitting that she couldn't contain her excitement and blurted it out to my wife-to-be.

To be honest, I was really annoyed at first because it ruined the entire surprise, but after a while, I realised that even though my darling knew of my intentions, she did not have the ring yet. I bought the ring behind her back, and proposed to her on the plane during a short getaway to Bali. She was ecstatic! She couldn't stop talking after she said yes, much to the annoyance of other passengers." *laughs*

"We just got engaged 6 months ago! My dog, Ruffles, helped me propose! I know it sounds silly but my girlfriend loves dogs so much, I knew I had to rope in my best furry friend to help me win her over! So I looped his collar through the ring, and told him to sit. I went into the room with my girlfriend, and told her to call my dog over because I said that he had missed her. She did, and when Ruffles ran over and she carried him, she saw the sparkly ring dangling from his collar. I took him from her, got down on one knee, lifted him (and the ring) up to her and popped the question. She said yes and kissed Ruffles!"

"I did what most Singaporean men would do. I asked for her hand in marriage at a restaurant, and she said yes! Even until today she complains that I was boring. Bleah!

"I proposed to my wife 2 years ago, and let me tell you, I was so freaking nervous! Because my wife didn't like lavish or grand proposals (she had told me this before), I decided to take her to Botanic Gardens for a picnic. The plan was kind of ruined a little because it rained, but that didn't stop me! While we were running for shelter, I was fumbling around for the ring in my pocket, to ensure that it was still there. When we got to the shelter, she was laughing and putting down her bag, and I quickly got down on my knee to prepare. When she turned, oh my god, the look on her face.

She stared at the ring for a few seconds, and then to me and asked, "Really?" I nodded and asked if she would marry me. She agreed, and just as I was about to place the ring on her finger, she laughed and said, "Aiyah we look so ugly, all drenched. But it's okay, this is one memory that I'll never forget!"

"I asked her if she wanted to apply for a BTO flat with me. She was angry at first, because it wasn't a proper proposal, but what she didn't know was that I had already purchased the ring. We had dinner with her family one day, and it was during dessert that I proposed. I was so scared that I was gonna fart during this special moment, because it usually happens to me when I get nervous. Thankfully, I didn't. Best. Night. Ever!"

"I remember the proposal like it was yesterday, even though we've been married for 15 years! Things were different back then, and I proposed to my wife at my home. She had cooked a simple dinner, and we were chatting over dinner about how it would feel like if we were married. I asked her if that was what she really wanted. My wife came from a well-off family, and marrying me would make her parents angry (they believed that she should have married a rich man).

She said yes and I guess I was so overwhelmed with emotion at that moment that I got down on one knee, and did an impromptu proposal. I did not have a ring, so I wrapped a strand of bee hoon around her ring finger and that's how our we cemented our moment. It's been a crazy 15 years, mixed with minor fights and majorly tender moments... and I still think that it was the best decision I have ever made."
