Should Singapore change our age of sexual consent?

What do you think, should Singapore change our age of sexual consent or does 16 work? If we should change it, what should the new age be?

A recent video by SDP has got politicians and netizens questioning if Singapore should change our age of sexual consent.

Currently the age of consent in Singapore is 16. In Argentina, Spain, South Korea and Japan the age of consent is 13, China, Macau and Brazil have set it at 14. On the flip side California, Florida, Egypt and Panama only allow those above 18 to have sexual relations.

We put the question up on Facebook and a number of parents replied.

Mum Norma Shahid shared that while she was okay with increasing it, she was definitely not okay with decreasing it. Another mum who agreed with Norma was Kris Goh. She shared, “16 is really too young… Sld be 21 ba, as tat the adult legal age.. At the age, their thinking sld be more mature..”

But we felt the point mentioned by Mum Catherine Sallah held a lot of weight. “No matter what the legal age is people will still have underage sex. That’s not to say I don’t think there should be a legal age – its good to have a guideline – but its not exactly an easy law to enforce.”
