SG60 List: Singapore Leads Maritime Electrification with Solar-Powered Boats

SG60 List: Singapore Leads Maritime Electrification with Solar-Powered Boats

In a landmark move for sustainable transport, Pyxis, a Singapore-based maritime start-up, officially introduced the Pyxis R solar-powered electric ferries to ply the Singapore River starting April 2025 . Two of the ten boats have already been delivered, with the remaining vessels entering service every other month by year-end. These ferries represent a major step forward in clean energy adoption in urban river transport.

Floating Solar Farms with V2G Technology

Each Pyxis R vessel can generate approximately 22 kWh of solar power daily, which collectively across ten boats equals enough energy to power 20 HDB flats for a full day. Thanks to vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology, these boats can feed surplus energy back into the grid or power nearby micro-waterfront installations, effectively forming a “floating solar.

Cleaner Rides with Real Cost and Emission Benefits

Pyxis estimates these solar ferries will meet at least 50% of daily energy needs, resulting in an expected 30–40% reduction in long-term operational costs for operators such as WaterB. The electric design not only cuts emissions but also provides quieter, smoother journeys for passengers, enhancing sustainable tourism along key routes between Clarke Quay, Boat Quay, and Marina Bay.

Pyxis’s Vision: Electrifying Asia’s Maritime Sector

Founded by Tommy Phun in 2022, Pyxis stands on the pillars of Electric vessels, charging Energy infrastructure, and its IoT platform Electra for smart operations. Supported by S$6 million in funding and winning the Emerging Enterprise Sustainability Award 2024, Pyxis plans to scale its maritime electrification across Asia-Pacific—including Japan, Indonesia, Australia, and South Korea—with over 100 electric vessels planned by 2030.

SG60 Reflection: Innovation Anchored in Sustainability

As Singapore marks SG60, Pyxis’s solar-powered ferries embody national ambition: blending tradition with innovation to pave a greener path forward. This leap—from diesel-dominated fleets to smart electric transport—reinforces Singapore’s role as a global innovation hub and a sustainability leader for future generations.

By turning everyday river cruises into renewable energy sources, Pyxis illuminates a future where city life, enterprise, and ecology move forward together.
