Extending Rail Reach into the West
Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat confirmed on 5 March 2025 that the Jurong Region Line (JRL) extension to West Coast station will go ahead. Phase 1, expected by the late 2030s, will link Pandan Reservoir to West Coast on the Cross Island Line (CRL), followed by Phase 2 in the early 2040s, extending further to Kent Ridge station on the Circle Line (CCL).
These extensions aim to support new and upcoming developments in Tengah, Jurong Lake District and the Greater Southern Waterfront, ensuring future residents enjoy convenient rail access from home.
Two New MRT Lines Under Study
In parallel, two tentatively named MRT lines—Tengah and Seletar—are undergoing feasibility studies, with possible interconnection near the Greater Southern Waterfront. These lines, still in planning, could serve areas including Woodlands, Sengkang, Serangoon North, Whampoa, and beyond. Officials estimate these new lines may be operational in the 2040s, subject to approval and planning timelines.
This network expansion reflects the government’s forward vision—to create a more comprehensive rail system connecting residential towns with evolving commercial and waterfront districts.
Cross Island Line Phase 2 Accelerates Capacity
Meanwhile, construction began on six stations of CRL Phase 2—Turf City, Maju, King Albert Park, Clementi, West Coast, and Jurong Lake District—as of July 2025, with expected completion by 2032. These CRL segments add 15km of track and new interchange points at Downtown Line and East-West Line stations.
CRL Phase 2 enhances connectivity by providing an alternative east–west route, relieving congestion on existing lines and linking new communities to the broader rail network.
Enabling the 2040 Vision
These developments fall under the Land Transport Master Plan 2040, which aims to ensure 8 in 10 households are within a 10-minute walk of an MRT station by 2030. Extending rail connections into the West, Tengah, and Seletar regions helps meet long-term mobility goals.
At SG60, this expansion embodies national values: foresight, inclusivity, and sustainable infrastructure serving future populations—ensuring transport policy grows with our nation.
