Revealed: How Reddit Users Are Weighing the Benefits of Giving Birth in Singapore for Foreigners

Revealed: How Reddit Users Are Weighing the Benefits of Giving Birth in Singapore for Foreigners

In a Reddit forum discussion, it appears that the question is more complex than it seems, especially with regard to the benefits of giving birth in Singapore for foreigners.

In the world of parenting, there’s no shortage of decisions to make. One such decision that often crops up for expatriates living in Singapore is where to give birth — in their home country or in Singapore? In a Reddit forum discussion, it appears that the question is more complex than it seems, especially with regard to the benefits of giving birth in Singapore for foreigners.

The Cost Factor

One of the main concerns raised by the original poster (OP) Zealousideal-Run-173 was the cost difference. Giving birth in Singapore can cost anywhere between $8,000 and $17,000, compared to around $2,000 in India, the OP’s home country. While the cost might seem steep, the OP was not overly concerned as her husband would be commuting back and forth from India, which could potentially equalize the costs.

Does Giving Birth in Singapore Help with PR Application?

The primary question raised in the forum was whether giving birth in Singapore would aid in gaining Permanent Residency (PR).

Unfortunately, the majority of users agreed that having a child born in Singapore does not necessarily give an advantage when applying for PR.

Medical Costs and Quality of Care

Another point of contention from user WhiteJadedButterfly was the potential for high emergency costs and expensive paediatric consultations in Singapore.

Some users suggested that these costs, combined with the lack of financial assistance available, could outweigh the benefits of giving birth in Singapore for foreigners.

However, it’s crucial to remember that Singapore has a low maternal and infant mortality rate, suggesting a high standard of care.

As WhiteJadedButterfly puts it, “the odds are in your favour” in Singapore.

Immigration Considerations

Interestingly, user Quiet-Track7722 pointed out that the place of birth can matter for immigration to some countries, including the United States. Therefore, having a child born in Singapore could potentially impact future immigration opportunities.

Eligibility and Requirements for Foreigners Giving Birth in Singapore

Foreigners can indeed give birth in Singapore, but the process involves significant paperwork and associated fees. It’s important to note that giving birth in Singapore does not guarantee any privileges towards obtaining PR status.

To deliver a baby in Singapore as a foreigner, you must apply for permission through a local sponsor before your arrival. The mother and local sponsor are required to produce several documents upon application.

Documents Needed

These include:

  1. A recent photograph of the mother taken within the last three months against a white background.

  2. The biodata page of the mother’s passport.

  3. Disembarkation or Embarkation (D/E) number (if applicable).

  4. The original and photocopy of the applicant’s marriage certificate.

  5. A letter from a locally registered doctor stating the expected delivery date and if there are any complications with the pregnancy.

  6. A letter from the Embassy or High Commission of the applicant’s country stating that her newborn child will follow the parent’s nationality and a valid travel document of that country will be issued to the newborn child.

  7. The sponsor’s identity card.

As a visitor in Singapore, you must ensure to have a valid Visit Pass throughout your stay. Hence, you may need to apply for the Long-Term Visit Pass (LTVP) with at least ten days left on your Visit Pass. After you collate all your requirements, you need to pay a non-refundable processing fee, which is 30 SGD. Additional fees will apply upon collection. Both the mother and the sponsor must be present during the issuance of the LTVP.

The Visitor Services Centre, where the LTVP is issued, is located at the ICA Building, 10 Kallang Road, Level 4, Singapore 208718. Its operating hours are from 8.00 am to 4.00 pm on Mondays to Fridays, excluding public holidays.

Considering the Costs

While the process might seem daunting, Singapore’s renowned healthcare system and low maternal and infant mortality rates make it a safe choice for childbirth.

However, foreigners should be prepared for the costs associated with giving birth in Singapore, as the country does not provide financial assistance or support.

As with any significant life decision, the choice of where to give birth ultimately depends on individual circumstances and priorities. While the benefits of giving birth in Singapore for foreigners might not include PR application advantages, the high standard of healthcare is a significant factor to consider.

Whether you’re an expatriate living in Singapore or planning to move there, it’s essential to weigh all aspects before making a decision. And remember, every parent’s journey is unique — what works for one might not work for another.
