Before we talk about the City Square Mall carnival, let’s have a quick history lesson. You’re probably familiar with City Square Mall, which is just next to Farrer Park Station. But do you know what was there before it?
Long ago, in the days of yore, it wasn’t City Square Mall but New World Amusement Park that graced this very location. If you are a 70s or 80’s kid, you might have fond memories of it. New World Amusement Park was Singapore’s oldest amusement park and home to a wide array of dance halls, restaurants, game booths, and even spicier stuff like cabarets. Our parents’ generation fondly remember it as one of the most vibrant and colourful nightlife locations back in the day.
But as always, change is the only constant and New World Amusement Park’s glory days came to an end in 1987. It was closed permanently and eventually replaced by City Square Mall. Apart from cabarets, City Square Mall is pretty much similar to New World Amusement Park, replete with food, entertainment, a cinema, and for the March holiday period, a carnival as well.
Yes, that’s right, a carnival just like in the good old days.
