The bond of friendship is a really special one. It shapes who we are and who we are yet to be. Friendship soothes our tumultuous inner world, fills the emotional gaps in our marriage, and helps us remember who we really are.
A recent study by Harvard Medical School, found that the more friends people had, the less likely they were to develop physical impairments as they aged, and the more likely they were to be leading a joyful life. In fact, the results were so significant, the researchers concluded, that not having close friends or confidants was as detrimental to your health as smoking or carrying extra weight.
Another landmark study by Harris Interactive, found that 64 percent of people choose to talk to their friends rather than their spouses or parents about relationships and sex. The revelations come as no surprise to researchers who have studied friendships.
