Fair Treatment for Pregnant Women: Former Singapore Police Officer Reema Razif's Advocacy

"I realised I did not matter. That I was just another employee" Former Singapore Police Officer, Reema Razif sheds light on workplace challenges and discrimination for pregnant women.

In 2020, officer Reema Razif’s social media post garnered widespread attention for showcasing her diligent work ethic while heavily pregnant during the pandemic, despite regulations prohibiting comments on internal agency matters without prior approval. Reema’s post, in defiance of these regulations, significantly captured the public’s interest and gained considerable traction.

Departure and Allegations of Discrimination

Reema Razif made a significant announcement, revealing her resignation from the Singapore Police Force on May 2, 2022. During this disclosure, she openly shared the motivations behind her departure, emphasising the profound sense of being undervalued and encountering discriminatory treatment throughout her extensive 11-year tenure.

She specifically cited instances where her performance grade was purportedly affected due to her pregnancy, coupled with the distressing advice to engage in projects while on maternity leave.

Singapore Police Force’s Rebuttal and Pregnancy Policy

The Singapore Police Force responded by clarifying its policy, placing emphasis on their support for pregnant officers and their provision of alternative work arrangements to ensure their well-being. Specifically, they detailed that Reema was assigned primarily desk-bound duties during her pregnancies and assured that she was not obligated to work during her paid maternity leave.

Reema’s Advocacy and Future Endeavors

Despite the obstacles she faced, Reema, now embracing the role of a stay-at-home mother, is determined to be an advocate for pregnant employees, advocating for equitable treatment in the workplace. After her public resignation, she conveyed her appreciation for the overwhelming support received and expressed her aspiration to bring attention to workplace discrimination and the experiences of women in comparable situations.

Reema’s narrative shed light on the challenges and biases she faced as a pregnant officer, portraying a disheartening reality that clashed with her dedication and commitment to the force. This disclosure not only depicted her personal experience but also became a crucial catalyst for discussions regarding equitable treatment and respect for women in similar professional roles.
