Mums Shine a Light on the Importance of Family Planning

"Family planning is the right to decide whether to have children or not."

Have you and your spouse considered the importance of family planning? When we encounter this question, we often associate the topic with preventing unexpected pregnancies. In truth, there’s more to know about the topic aside from using contraception.

theAsianparent recently collaborated with Ease to share the importance of family planning. Along with the Ease co-founder, Guadalupe Lazaro, three mums share their thoughts on the importance of the subject. In this way, people will be able to make wise decisions regarding family planning.

In this article, you’ll read:

  • Raising Awareness

Let’s Stress the Importance of Family Planning

Family planning allows people to attain their desired number of children and helps determine the spacing of their pregnancy. Aside from that, it also helps protect women from any health risks that may occur before, during, and after childbirth.

Ease co-founder Guadalupe Lazaro and other mums from Ease generously shared their thoughts and stance on the importance of family planning in Singapore.

According to Ms Lazaro, “family planning is the right to decide whether to have children or not.“

Moreover, it includes the right of an individual to determine when to have and how many children they would want to have. Read below to see what Ms Lazaro and mums Debbie, Peggy, and Hui Ling have to say about family planning.

Raising Awareness

Family planning allows individuals and couples to know and be aware of the modern contraceptive options they could use. They will become aware of the proper use of contraceptive methods or infertility treatment.

For most of us, things do not always go along with what we have planned. This especially applies to new couples and families. With family planning, people will be able to know the safe and effective use of contraception.

In Singapore, support options for family planning exists. It will help them discover resources available to help them make wise decisions. Additionally, couples will also be able to become aware of the misconceptions about contraceptives.

Lessening Unexpected Pregnancies

Bringing a child to the world is something everyone must take seriously. Through family planning, people will have more access to sex education.

Moreover, we must realise that searching these topics online isn’t enough. With different contraceptive methods that people could learn in family planning, many people will be able to prevent unwanted pregnancies.

Minimising Risks of Pregnancy Complications

Family planning helps minimise pregnancy complications. It allows people to be more knowledgeable about maternal ill-health, pregnancy-related deaths, and the overall well-being of mum and child.

Preventing Infection of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)

Yes, believe it or not, knowing the importance of family planning helps you avoid STDs or STIs. Knowing about the topic encourages more people to use contraceptive methods.

By doing so, we prevent the spread of these diseases while avoiding unwanted pregnancies. Additionally, more people can know about contraceptives that also prevent the transmission of STDs.

Addressing the Role of Dads

Indeed, women play a huge part in family planning. They conceive and give birth to the baby or babies that complete the typical family setup. However, we must remember that a father’s role in building and planning a family is just as important as a mum’s.

Both the soon-to-be parents have the final say on how they want to build the family. Fathers must be part of the decision-making process, considering different aspects of their lives.

Couples must have an open conversation to discuss things about extending their family. They must discuss things like how many children they would want and how they can attain goals as a family.

Empowering Mums and Women

Ms Lazaro says family planning “can empower them to have greater choices and control over their bodies and reproductive health.”

It could help women to time their pregnancy better by themselves. As a result, it will give them time and space to develop personally and professionally.

“Family planning empowers women to have greater control – better health, greater opportunities, productive employment, and the ability to explore their own potential,” said Debie.

How Can You Improve Your Sexual and Reproductive Health?

Ease serves as a healthcare company that offers a holistic service model built on comprehensive care, education and support. They aim to deliver exceptional health outcomes.

Ms Guadalupe Lazaro is the co-founder of Ease Healthcare, one of Asia’s fastest-growing women’s health ecosystems. By launching Ease, they aim to improve women’s access to sexual, menstrual, and reproductive health across Asia.

The company also focuses on addressing the gaps in access to contraception and lack of sexual education. Furthermore, they craft products, tech, and service-based solutions that transform access to health for thousands of women in the region.

Additionally, Ease believes that healthcare should be accessible, affordable, and convenient for everyone, with no exceptions. It also serves as a digital health platform that improves access to sexual and reproductive health services.
