More applicants than openings
Channel News Asia confirms that 81 out of the 190 primary schools in Singapore are over capacity after Phase 2C, mainly because there are more applicants than the number of spaces for students. Henry Park Primary School has registered 19 children for only nine openings. Similarly, at Hougang Primary, 111 students have been registered for only 70 openings. However, applications will more likely be accepted in primary schools that are still have openings.
Despite the Ministry of Education’s efforts to prevent such an issue by extending online internet registration to 80 primary schools this year in order to facilitate registration, there is still an issue with having more applicants than openings in primary schools. It appears that parents still prefer to physically go to the primary school to register rather than to do so online. Only 30% of all registrations have been made through the Internet. In addition to this, three new primary schools are accepting applicants this year. These include Alexandra Primary School, West Spring Primary School, and Northoaks Primary School.
