Let's be honest, you can't call yourself a true blue Singaporean unless you've been to a pasar malam (night market) here in Singapore and have eaten any one of these tasty foods. Located at various neighbourhoods, these pasar malams carry a variety of foods, clothes, games, pottery and even plants! Though Singapore is an ever-changing society, one thing's for sure -pasar malams here will never change.

Steamed Rice Cakes

They come in a variety of colours, and when I was a kid, I would always opt for the pink ones! Truth is, these steamed rice cakes are all of the same flavour, and are only coloured to make them look attractive (and it works!). You can opt to purchase these steamed, or not steamed (so you can head home to steam them yourself!).

Muah Chee

These sticky rice dough coated with peanuts, sesame and sugar are almost always made on the spot. This is a type of Singaporean snack that is somehow only tasty when bought from pasar malams, and it is a must to have them while they're warm!

Herbal Eggs

Also know as tea eggs, these are hard boiled eggs that have been soaking in a medley of herbs, tea and spices. They are left to simmer throughout the day, and the eggs absorb just about all the herby goodness of the broth. A must try for all egg lovers!

Prawn Vadai

Sometimes known as Vadeh, these fried savoury flour snacks are usually topped with prawns and are absolutely worth the calories! Think of them as a local twist on donuts. These snacks are usually eaten with green chilli, so after taking a bite of the vadeh, take a bite out of the green chilli! We promise you no regrets!

Kueh Tutu

Made from rice and glutinous flour, choose between a variety of toppings such as peanut, coconut, brown sugar and even chocolate! The soft and fluffy exterior perfectly compliments the gooey and sweet inside, and is a popular snack among so many Singaporeans. Not only are these tiny perfections addictive, watching how the vendors make them is just as addictive!

Ramly Burger

How could you not have one of these during a visit to a pasar malam? Though there are many vendors selling this delicious burger, there would always be a long queue at every Ramly Burger stall, and we don't blame them! We'd queue for half an hour too if it means getting our hands on one of these delicious snack!

Tapioca Kueh

Just like its name, this is a kueh (pancake) made from tapioca, pan fried to crispy perfection. Though this snack can be a little oily, it is worth the calories once you take a bite out of it. They are sticky, chewy and a little sweet, you definitely won't be able to stop at just one!
