Must see: Mum's hilarious postpartum photo goes viral

4 min read

In the past few days, a photo of a mother in her underwear has gone viral. Now before we go any further, I know what you’re probably thinking: “a mum in her underwear? It must be some type of over-sexualised image used by this mum to gain popularity.”

Well, let me stop you in your tracks, because the point of this photo is to encapsulate postpartum mummies with absolute honesty. Amanda Bacon, the star of this photo isn’t some sex symbol draped in seductive lingerie, instead, she’s sporting mesh postpartum pregnancy undies. And, let’s just say, the photo is pretty darn funny!

“This is motherhood; it’s raw, stunning, messy, and freaking hilarious all rolled into one,” Bacon wrote in the caption of this the viral photo on Facebook.  She even went as far as to title the hilarious photo “Motherhood uncensored.” “Having a baby is a beautiful experience, and the realities of postpartum life aren’t spoken enough about. And definitely not photographed enough,” she added.

For Amanda, the image perfectly expresses postpartum, and pregnancy as a whole. It’s sheer honesty with a dash of comedy and modesty.

“Nothing says welcome to motherhood like an adorable squishy baby, and a giant mum diaper,” she wrote in her post.

Ken Hardy, the “photographer” is seen holding heir child, Pierson, in the hysterical photo. Surely this was one of the happiest days of his life, but one has to wonder if he’s smiling and giving a thumbs-up pose for the arrival of his adorable son, or to make the hilarious picture even more amusing!

While the picture is funny beyond belief, Bacon didn’t just share it to get a few laughs. In an exclusive interview with TODAY, Bacon said,”The photo shows a candid view of postpartum life: The good, the bad and the ugly. It’s beautiful, but it’s messy.”

Bacon’s ultimate goal, other than inducing laughter, was to show a more realistic side to pregnancy. Specifically, a more accurate portrayal of what to expect after pregnancy. It’s a topic that’s not usually covered with the most detail, so Bacon figured she’d do her part in getting soon-to-be mothers ready for the experience.

“At first it made me feel awkward seeing it, but it was hilarious and I felt like it was a part of childbirth that people don’t really share or speak about. A lot of people are appreciative that I showed this side of it,” Bacon told TODAY. “It’s kind of an uncomfortable thing to share with people. It’s not something you go chatting with your friends about. It’s like an invisible notch on your badge of motherhood that we all go through.”

The photo has been well received for more than its comedy. If you take the time to scroll through the post’s comment section, you’ll find kind, encouraging words, as well as testimonies of how the picture works in prepping expecting mothers.

“This is the REALEST post I have ever seen,” Nik Miles wrote. “It is exactly like this.”

“Brilliant!” Sarah Jayne responded in the comment section. “I remember looking like this after all 3 of mine! Celebrities make out that you have a baby, put your skinny jeans on and walk about looking fabulous! This is the real post-birth look!”
