Mum accidentally burns son with hot water from a garden hose

A mother in Phoenix, Arizona has learned a tough lesson the hard way when it comes to water hoses after she accidentally burned his nine-month-old baby in an attempt to cool him down.

According to an ABC 7 report, mum Dominique Woodger wanted her son to have a reprieve from the summer heat, so she set up a kiddie pool outside her house.

“As the pool has been set up, she propped down her son, Nicholas, on it and then turned on the faucet to fill this with water from the garden hose,” the report said.

However, the water from the garden hose was “extremely hot” that when it touched the baby’s skin, it caused second-degree burns.

“She says she was about to fill a little pool with water when she turned on the faucet,” the report said. “The extremely hot water came out of the sprinkler head attached to the hose, getting all over her baby who was sitting on the ground.”

When her son began to cry, Dominique dismissed it. Nicholas hates it when he is sprayed in the face; she didn’t think she was burning her son.

Reports say that 30 percent of the baby’s skin was burned.

“All of it was peeling,” Dominique recalled. “He had blisters all over the right side.”

Thankfully, after doctors attended to the baby, they said he would be all right, but his mother still feels guilty about the accident.

In a KTLA report, it revealed that on that particular day the temperature outside was 46 degrees Celsius: left exposed in the scorching sun, the water inside a hose could have reached as high as 150 degrees.

“At those temperatures, something as short as a 10 or 30-second exposure can result in a second-degree burn,” said Capt. Larry Subervi of the Phoenix Fire Department.

Now Dominique wants parents to learn from her story. “Just be careful,” she advises. “Touch [the water] before you let your kids near it.”
