More NDP outreach efforts this year

Organisers of this year's National Day Parade (NDP) are extending outreach efforts to get more people involved in what it means to be Singaporean.

NDP outreach efforts are better this year

As part of the “Reflections on the Singapore Spirit” campaign, Singaporeans are encouraged to share their thoughts through several activities.

They can film, design, pen their thoughts, or even sing about them in the first-ever ‘Sing the NDP Songs’ competition.

The chairman of the NDP’s Outreach Management and Celebrations Committee, Major Kennedy Lim, said that response has been good so far.

He said: “This show choir format is new and it is quite a big hit in Singapore. It has got a fan base. It is in a format that Singaporeans are familiar with. For us, we thought it was going to be a good idea to attract participation in this competition.”

Other creative ways where Singaporeans can share their thoughts include a T-shirt design competition and a photography competition.

Tech-savvy Singaporeans can also download mobile phone “NDPOnTheGo” application which allows them to post reflections through photographs, videos and short stories.

Organisers said the application has been downloaded more than 37,000 times.

Also for the first time, outreach efforts will be extended to the libraries, where exhibitions showcasing Singapore’s history will be held.

The four libraries involved are Ang Mo Kio Community Library, Marine Parade Community Library, Jurong Regional Library and Woodlands Regional Library.

Exhibitions will also be held at the Marina Barrage and Images of Singapore at Sentosa, while a roadshow at ION Orchard will feature performances and lucky draws.

Major Lim said: “We feel that it is a cosy environment and a good environment for Singaporeans to take a pause, learn a little more about Singapore’s heritage, of inspiring Singaporeans, and it also provides a good environment for Singaporeans to then reflect and pen down their reflections on the Singapore spirit.”

Organisers said some 15,000 reflections have been received so far.
