We’re no strangers to the willpower and strength that emanates from mothers. Danni Bett, a mother from Nelson, NZ, is another perfect example.

Danni and her two-month-old daughter Indi were recently driving to pay a visit to Indi’s father. Suddenly, Danni lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a fence. By all accounts, the care was totalled.
In an interview with Stuff.co.nz, Danni recalled the events after the accident: “I remember switching the car off. People came running out of the building to see if I was OK. All I could say was, ‘Get my baby out, she’s in the car, get my baby'”
Indi, who was amazingly still sleeping in the car, awoke from the frenzy going on outside of the vehicle.
“I was in so much shock [after the crash],” Danni explained. “The paramedics came and checked us both out and we jumped in the back of the ambulance.”
Luckily, the accident occurred just 10 minutes away from Christchurch Hospital. After a brief assessment, the paramedics transported the mother and her child to the hospital.
Upon reaching the hospital, Danni’s shock had worn off. It was then that she felt intense pain in her neck, back, and hip. The staff at Christchurch placed the mother in a neck brace. She was also given a series of tests, including x-rays and ultrasounds, to determine the severity of damage caused by the accident.
The medical staff also insisted that the mother take pain pills to combat the intense pain throughout her body. Danni refused. She knew her child was unsettled and hungry and that she would soon need to breastfeed her. Knowing that strong pain medications would jeopardise her breastmilk, the brave mother took only paracetamol to counter the intense pain.
After hours in the hospital receiving constant care, Danni knew it was time for her to feed Indi. Initially, the staff had begged her not to feed her daughter.
“I asked if I could feed her, but they said no and suggested a bottle, but I said ‘Please, don’t,'” said Danni. “I could hear Indi crying. She was really unsettled.”

Despite the concerns and recommendations of the nurses and doctors, Bett was determined to nurture her young infant.
“It was instant relief,” Danni claimed. “I wanted her, I wanted to calm her. After a traumatic day as it is, to give her that [a bottle] would not be right. [Breastfeeding] is the best for her and I had that.”
The nurses, who had recommended otherwise, had a change of heart upon seeing this beautiful moment between a mother and her daughter. They captured the photo of the mother in poor condition, as she lay in her hospital bed wearing a neck brace, doing everything in her power to feed her unsettled child.
As you can imagine, the photo has been making quite a splash in the parenting community and social media as a whole.

The post has garnered thousands of reactions, comments, likes, and general support. Bett spoke of the immense support she’s received since posting the photo:
“I posted our story to reach out to other mums about breastfeeding that no matter what it’s our choice to feed our babies whenever, wherever. If it’s in public or in a hospital bed it’s our right.”
As of now, Danni is still recovering. Her body may be weak at the moment, but her willpower speaks for itself. She’s yet another shining and inspiring example of the strength of mothers everywhere. Get well soon, Danni!
