May 9: NUHCS and NUH Deliver Lifesaving Cardiac Surgeries in Fiji

May 2025 Highlights: Heres Everything You Need to Know

Heart to Heart Mission Offers a Lifeline to Children Across the Pacific

A multidisciplinary team from the National University Heart Centre, Singapore (NUHCS) and the National University Hospital (NUH) traveled to Suva, Fiji, for their third Heart to Heart Mission, delivering vital pediatric cardiac care to underserved communities in the Pacific region.

The team of 14 specialists—including surgeons, anesthetists, nurses, and perfusionists—completed 14 complex heart surgeries at the Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Children’s Heart Hospital Fiji (SSSSCHF) over six days. Among the highlights was Fiji’s first-ever open mitral valvotomy for rheumatic heart disease. With no pediatric cardiac services available locally, and overseas treatment often unaffordable, this mission directly addressed a dire medical gap where over 2,700 children annually are born with congenital heart disease.

Beyond surgery, the mission focused on capacity building. On May 9, NUH signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with SSSSCHF to support annual missions, training, and long-term knowledge exchange. NUH and NUHCS will also host Fijian medical staff for short-term training and observerships in Singapore, nurturing cross-border collaboration in healthcare.

Associate Professor Laszlo Kiraly, who leads the mission, emphasized its dual impact: saving lives while enriching NUHCS’s congenital heart programme and fostering a strong culture of compassion and volunteerism. NUH’s CEO, Professor Aymeric Lim, called the partnership part of a broader global health initiative that includes countries like Bangladesh, Indonesia, and the Philippines—extending Singapore’s medical excellence across Southeast Asia and the Pacific.

National Gallery Singapore and Odette Unite Art and Gastronomy

May 2025 Highlights: Heres Everything You Need to Know

French Fine Dining Meets Asian Art History in “City of Others” Exhibition

In a harmonious blend of culture and cuisine, National Gallery Singapore has partnered with the renowned three-Michelin-starred restaurant Odette to offer an exclusive four-course lunch celebrating its latest exhibition, City of Others: Asian Artists in Paris, 1920s–1940s.

This collaboration, available Tuesdays to Thursdays until 30 June 2025, allows visitors to indulge in Chef Julien Royer’s refined modern French creations, deeply inspired by Asian influences—a nod to the artistic cross-cultural journeys explored in the exhibition. The dining experience includes a starter, fish course, main dish, and dessert at $298++ per person, along with a complimentary exhibition ticket.

“City of Others” showcases over 200 artworks and archival materials, casting light on the lives, interactions, and creative contributions of Asian artists in interwar Paris. By positioning them at the heart of the European art scene, the exhibition reshapes Western-centric art narratives and honors the unique perspectives of migrant and local Asian creators during a time of global transformation.

This cultural pairing offers a multisensory journey through art and cuisine, immersing guests in the convergence of East and West, tradition and modernity—all within the iconic National Gallery Singapore.

May 14: NUHCS Leads Asia in Gene Editing Trial for Rare Heart Condition

May 2025 Highlights: Heres Everything You Need to Know

The National University Heart Centre, Singapore (NUHCS) has made a significant leap in cardiac care by becoming the first center in Asia to participate in the MAGNITUDE clinical trial—a groundbreaking international study focused on treating transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM). This rare and potentially fatal condition arises from the buildup of abnormal transthyretin proteins in the heart and other organs, often leading to progressive heart failure. Affecting around 150 people in Singapore, symptoms such as numbness, dizziness, and limb stiffness are commonly misdiagnosed, and no cure currently exists.

The MAGNITUDE study investigates the use of Nexiguran Ziclumeran (NTLA-2001), a CRISPR-Cas9-based gene editing therapy administered intravenously as a single dose. This therapy aims to permanently silence the faulty gene responsible for producing the toxic protein, offering a potential once-in-a-lifetime treatment. Led locally by Asst. Prof. Lin Weiqin, the trial could pave the way for DNA-editing treatments in adult cardiology, a field yet to benefit from such technologies.

Among the five patients recruited at NUHCS is Mr. Chua Ah Hai, whose daily life had been severely impacted by the disease despite years of medication. Since receiving the infusion, he and other participants have reported no side effects, aligning with early international trial results showing rapid and durable reductions in the harmful protein. While results from the full study are expected in two to three years, this marks a promising step toward a cure for ATTR-CM and a potential paradigm shift in heart failure treatment across Asia.

May 24: National Museum Celebrates SG60 with Once Upon a Tide Exhibition and Children’s Season

May 2025 Highlights: Heres Everything You Need to Know

To commemorate Singapore’s 60th year of independence, the National Museum of Singapore (NMS) launched two major showcases on May 24 — the immersive exhibition Once Upon a Tide: Singapore’s Journey from Settlement to Global City, and the return of the family-favourite Children’s Season, themed Get Curious! Building Our Singapore.

Once Upon a Tide, which runs until 9 October 2026, invites visitors on a sweeping narrative of Singapore’s evolution across five thematic zones. It explores 700 years of maritime, economic, and cultural transformation, from the 14th-century trading port to today’s global city. The exhibition includes over 350 artefacts and interactive installations like the Sampan Challenge, digital historical map overlays, and RFID-based personalised storytelling, culminating in a collective vision of Singapore’s future.

Key sections such as Always on the Map, The River Road, Expanding Horizons, Flows of People, and Making Waves trace the island’s strategic role in regional trade, urban planning ingenuity, multiculturalism, and global impact. Featured stories spotlight individuals like pianist Margaret Leng Tan, sprinter Shanti Pereira, and filmmaker Eric Khoo, showing how Singaporeans are redefining success on the world stage.

Alongside the exhibition, Children’s Season 2025 offers young visitors interactive installations, hands-on activities, storytelling, film screenings, and role-playing zones like Our Mama Shop, co-created with children and seniors. Programmes such as The River Hunt and thank-you card writing to migrant workers encourage children to understand Singapore’s past and appreciate its builders, past and present.

Admission to Once Upon a Tide is free for Singaporeans and PRs, while Children’s Season installations are open to all. For more information, exhibition hours, and programme schedules, visit:

  • Once Upon a Tide: go.gov.sg/onceuponatide

  • Children’s Season 2025: go.gov.sg/nms-cs2025

Together, these initiatives offer an inclusive, intergenerational experience that honors the country’s rich heritage and looks ahead to its evolving identity.
