What are the main reasons why nannies quit their jobs?

What are the main reasons why nannies quit their jobs?

Like most jobs, nannies would eventually have to part ways with their employers. However, the reasons aren't always as amicable as you'd think.

Like most jobs, eventually would eventually have to part ways with their employers. In some cases, they part ways with their employer with both parties having a good relationship. However, this isn’t always true in all cases. Here are a few of the main reasons why nannies quit their jobs:

1. The workload is too heavy

This is a common reason why nannies quit. As an employer, it’s important for you to understand how much work your nanny can get done during a day. It’s equally important to respect your nanny during their days off, since some employers ask their nannies to work even during their days off. One thing that you can do is to create a contract for your nanny and negotiate the hours with her so that you can reach a good compromise.

2. Responsibilities are always changing

Right at the onset, it’s important for you to establish what jobs your nanny will be doing. It’s fine to add some tasks here and there, but make sure to know your nanny’s limits. You should be clear upfront about what jobs your nanny will be doing; if you’re hiring a nanny to take care of your child and do some light housework, then make sure that those are the things that you ask of her. It might be a bit too much to ask her to take care of your entire family and do all of the housework whilst taking care of your child.

3. The compensation isn’t enough

Wage disagreements are another common reason why nannies leave their job. It’s important to make sure that how much you’re your nanny corresponds directly to their workload. You also have to follow the law regarding their taxes, insurance, benefits etc. Nannies also need vacation leaves and days off, since they’re just like any other employee.

4. Homesickness

Some nannies can have no social life since they’re taking care of kids for most of the day. It’s also hard for full-time nannies since they live in the place where they work, there’s basically no “escape” from work. That’s why it’s important for employers to let the nannies take the kids out every once in a while so that they can have a change of pace and not feel like they’re trapped at home. Providing your nanny with a cellphone or with access to the internet is also a good idea so that they can contact their family.

5. Miscommunication

It’s important to have good communication with your nanny if you hope to have a good relationship with her. Don’t automatically expect your nanny to know all of the responsibilities that you’re giving her, so you have to be clear with what jobs you need her to do. It’s also a good idea to have a talk at the start of the day to go over your child’s activities, and you should also talk at the end of the day to discuss what happened throughout the day. Constant communication is key in making sure that you’re always on top of everything that’s happening in your home.
