Boy's fatal fall from flat: Law Minister Shanmugam says contractor was irresponsible

Boy's fatal fall from flat: Law Minister Shanmugam says contractor was irresponsible

A 4-year-old boy fell from a ninth-storey window after the contractor failed to install window grilles in the family’s flat.

Home Affairs and Law Minister K Shanmugam has said that action must be taken against an irresponsible contractor who failed to install window grilles in a Yishun flat in which a four-year-old boy fell to his death.

This accident happened on 6 October when the child was alone at home.

The family initially hired a contractor upon moving into their new flat. According to them, the contractor missed out on a handful of work, one of them being to install window grilles.

The family tried to contact the contractor after the tragedy happened, but to no avail. There was no apology or visit from the contractor, the father added.

In a recent Facebook post on Thursday (Oct 15), the Member of Parliament (MP) for Nee Soon GRC added, “If the facts that the father mentioned are true, then the conduct is shameful, irresponsible and has contributed to the tragedy”.

Mr Shanmugam also mentioned, “One can understand the parents’ anger, anguish. To lose a child like this because someone has not done what he is supposed to have done. And the conduct after the tragedy is shocking”.
