10 kids tell us what being Singaporean means to them!

9 Aug, 2015

What does it mean to be Singaporean? It's hard to say, but our kids might have some ideas! Melt your heart with these kids' responses to being Singaporean.

Don't you love looking at the world through the eyes of our little ones?

As the nation celebrates fifty years of history, we look at the children to show us the future. This SG50, we give you a peek into what Singapore looks like from the perspective of ten kids.

Filled with innocence and love, our kids tell us the truth without all the frills and politics.

Keep clicking next to have your heart melted by these kids' responses!

Singaporean Icons!

Singaporean Icons!

"Merlion, Bird Park, Sentosa, and Zoo!" -- Darien, 3

Darien represents all our little ones who gawk at the towering and shiny structures in Singapore when we bring them on a day out!

Cleanliness!

Cleanliness!

"[Being Singaporean means] being local and I love Singapore because of its clean & friendly environment."-- Declan, 9

It is great that our kids know to appreciate the cleanliness of our country. Let's hope they keep it that way!

Food!

Food!

"It means I get to eat local food and I have to learn more Chinese."-- Jamie, 9

Jamie speaks the minds of the foodies in Singapore! No matter what the age, we Singaporeans love our food, don't we?

She wants us all to be bilingual too!

Safety and company of loved ones!

Safety and company of loved ones!

"I feel happy being a Singaporean because I know I'm living in a safe place and all my loved ones are with me!" -- Julian, 9

Awwwww, It's lovely to know that even at such a young age, our kids recognise the exceptional safety Singapore provides. We hope we can live up to those expectations.

Celebrations!

Celebrations!

"Its my nationality and I get to celebrate SG50!" -- Roisin, 7

We agree with Roisin! We can't wait to be awed by the military displays and the fireworks during the National Day Parade!

Fun activities with the family!

Fun activities with the family!

"Being Singaporean means I can chase my brother on our kick scooters at the park on Saturdays and watch movies with my Obi and Oni (grandfather and grandmother)." -- Rusyaidi, 5

You can just hear the echoes of love and family that emanate from this little one's comment!

Sports and our national anthem!

Sports and our national anthem!

"Being Singaporean to me means football because I get to sing Majulah Singapura!" -- Matin, 6

This quote reminds us of the outpouring of the Singaporean spirit through sports at the SEA games this year. Go on and do us proud, Matin!

Beauty!

Beauty!

"I love being a Singaporean, because Singapore is clean and pretty!" -- Syaurah, 7

We do live in a beautiful city, don't we!

Family and ice cream!

Family and ice cream!

"Singapore means I get to be with Gong Gong, Po Po, Daddy and Mummy. And I get to go play and eat ice cream." -- Tristan, 4

Family ties are so important to us, even at a young age. And so is ice cream in our sunny island!

Working hard!

Working hard!

"Being a Singaporean is to work hard and to do your best for the future of the country, to be proud of the nation and to uphold whatever the previous generation has done for us." -- Valerie, 16

This maturity shows us that we are laying the right foundations for a generation of successors both conscious of the past and eager for the future.
