Kid-Friendly Hotels In Bali: Where To Stay With Young Children

6 min read
Kid-Friendly Hotels In Bali: Where To Stay With Young Children

Bali is the two-and-a-half-hour flight that makes a long weekend feel like a proper holiday, so half of Singapore seems to be there at any given school break.

The hotel counts for more here than anywhere else, though, because with small children you’ll spend most of the trip in it.

Pick the area before you pick the hotel. This decides the holiday far more than the property does.

  • Nusa Dua: a gated resort enclave with calm, protected, lifeguarded beaches and wide flat paths you can push a pram along. The easiest option with a toddler, and the least like Bali.
  • Sanur: calm shallow water, a long flat beachfront path, quieter and better value. Good middle ground.
  • Jimbaran: calm bay, close to the airport, seafood on the beach in the evening.
  • Seminyak: better restaurants and shopping, but strong surf and rip currents. Fine for a pool holiday, not for swimming in the sea with small children.
  • Ubud: green, cool, cultural, no beach. Lovely for a few nights; steep steps and ravines make it hard work with a toddler and a pram.

A common and sensible pattern: two or three nights in Ubud, then the rest by the sea.

Resorts that work with children

All of these were operating at the time of writing. Confirm facilities directly, since kids’ clubs and age bands change.

Nusa Dua is easiest with toddlers

  • Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua: beachfront, well regarded kids’ club
  • Bali Dynasty Resort: water play zone, long-standing family favourite and generally better value than the five-stars
  • Ayodya Resort Bali: interconnecting family rooms, family pool, waterslides, splash pad, trampoline and mini golf
  • InterContinental Bali Resort: six pools, a long stretch of beach, and the Planet Trekkers childcare facility

For older children who want things to do

  • Hard Rock Hotel Bali, Kuta: a very large free-form pool with waterslides, a climbing wall, and separate clubs split by age: under-4s, 4–12s and 13–17s. Babysitting available. Loud, and children love it.

If you’re spending more

  • RIMBA by AYANA, Jimbaran: part of the AYANA estate, so guests get access across the wider property including its many pools, private beach club and two kids’ clubs

What to check before booking

The photographs won’t tell you any of this. Email and ask.

  • Is the kids’ club included, and what ages? Many have a minimum age of four and charge for under-4s, which is exactly the age you most need it.
  • Is it toilet-training dependent? A common and rarely advertised condition.
  • Does the pool have a genuine shallow end or a separate children’s pool? “Family pool” often means one large deep pool.
  • Cot, bed rail, high chair, bath: free or chargeable, and do they need to be requested in advance?
  • Interconnecting rooms, if you need them, confirmed in writing, not “on request”.
  • How far is the room from the pool? On a large estate this is a real consideration in the middle of the day.
  • Babysitting: availability, cost, and how much notice.

The practical bits for a Singapore family

  • Flights are short but transfers aren’t. Ngurah Rai to Nusa Dua is usually 30–45 minutes; to Ubud it can be well over an hour and a half in traffic. Book an airport transfer through the hotel with a child seat, which taxis won’t have.
  • Bring your own car seat if you plan to travel much. They aren’t standard in Bali.
  • Water. Bottled only, including for brushing teeth, and be careful with ice outside decent hotels and restaurants. Stomach upsets are the single most common thing to ruin a family trip here.
  • Travel insurance that covers children properly, and check what it says about medical evacuation. BIMC and Siloam are the hospitals most often used by visitors.
  • Mosquitoes. Dengue is present. Repellent, and long sleeves at dusk.
  • Sun. It’s stronger than Singapore and it catches people out at the pool. Rash vests are easier than reapplying sunscreen to a wriggling toddler.

Frequently asked questions

Which part of Bali is best with young children?

Nusa Dua, for calm lifeguarded beaches, flat pram-friendly paths and resort facilities in a gated enclave. Sanur is a quieter, better-value alternative with similarly calm water, and Jimbaran has a sheltered bay close to the airport. Seminyak has stronger surf and rips, so treat it as a pool holiday, not a sea-swimming one, and Ubud has no beach and a lot of steps.

What should I check before booking a family hotel in Bali?

Whether the kids’ club is included and from what age. Many start at four and charge for under-4s. Whether it requires children to be toilet trained. Whether there’s a genuine shallow or separate children’s pool. Whether cots, bed rails and high chairs are free and need pre-booking. And get interconnecting rooms confirmed in writing instead of left “on request”.

How long is the transfer from the airport?

Usually 30 to 45 minutes to Nusa Dua, and often over an hour and a half to Ubud depending on traffic. Book a transfer through your hotel and request a child seat. Local taxis won’t have one, and bring your own car seat if you plan to move around.

Is it safe to drink the water in Bali?

Use bottled water, including for brushing teeth, and be cautious with ice outside established hotels and restaurants. Stomach upsets are the most common thing that spoils a family trip to Bali.

Do I need to worry about mosquitoes?

Dengue is present in Bali, so use repellent and cover arms and legs around dusk. Pack repellent suitable for children so you’re not relying on buying it there.

What to remember

Choose Nusa Dua or Sanur if your children are small, and treat Seminyak as a pool holiday, not a beach one. Ask about the kids’ club minimum age and toilet-training rule before you book, because those two answers decide whether you get a break.

Book a transfer with a child seat, drink bottled water, and pack rash vests. The rest usually looks after itself.
