Jokes For Kids: A Starter Set, And Why Humour Matters

4 min read
Jokes For Kids: A Starter Set, And Why Humour Matters

What better way of celebrating a Friday than by relaxing and watching funny videos? Here's the first part of "Just for Laughs, Singapore" that was aired on Channel 5 on Tuesday. Enjoy!

The original of this page was two embedded episodes of a Channel 5 comedy show that no longer stream anywhere. What survives the dead video is the better idea underneath it: a household that laughs together, and a stock of clean jokes a child can learn, tell, and ruin at the dinner table.

Why bother teaching a child jokes at all? Because “getting” one is a cognitive milestone.

A joke requires holding two meanings of a word at once, or spotting that an expectation has been broken on purpose: real mental work. A child who tells a joke and lands it’s practising language, timing, and reading an audience’s reaction, all at once. So the endless knock-knocks aren’t just noise; they’re a workout wearing a party hat.

A starter set that survives repetition

Chosen for the two things that count in a family joke: clean, and funny on the fourth telling.

  • Why did the biscuit go to the doctor? Because it was feeling crummy.
  • What do you call a fish with no eyes? A fsh.
  • Why can’t you give Elsa a balloon? She’ll let it go.
  • What’s brown and sticky? A stick.
  • Knock knock. Who’s there? Interrupting cow. Interrupting c, MOO.
  • Why did the maths book look sad? It had too many problems.
  • What do you call cheese that isn’t yours? Nacho cheese.
  • Why did the teddy bear say no to dessert? She was stuffed.
  • What has hands but can’t clap? A clock.
  • Where do cows go on Friday night? To the moo-vies.

The local additions your child will out-perform you on: the durian jokes, the kopi-order jokes, the “why is the MRT like…” jokes. Let them invent their own: a homemade joke that makes no sense but delights its author is the whole point, not a failure of comedy.

Matching jokes to your child’s age

Humour has an order of operations, a topic in its own right, covered in the companion piece linked below. For joke-telling, the youngest find surprise and silly words funniest (nonsense, funny voices, anything involving “poo”), while wordplay and riddles land only once a child can hold two meanings of a word, usually from around six or seven. Pitch above that and you get a polite blank; pitch to it and you get a convert.

Why family laughter helps

A family that laughs together is doing something measurable: shared laughter lowers tension, defuses standoffs, and builds the warm bank balance that makes the hard parenting moments survivable. The parent who can turn a brewing tantrum with a ridiculous voice has a tool no discipline chart supplies. You don’t need to be funny. You need to be willing to be silly, which children grade on a far gentler curve. Laugh at their terrible jokes; the appreciation matters more than the punchline, and it teaches them that making people happy is a thing worth doing.

Frequently asked questions

Why should I teach my child jokes?

Telling a joke well is real cognitive practice: language, double meanings, timing and reading an audience, all at once. And shared laughter builds warmth that makes everything else in family life easier.

What kind of jokes do young children find funny?

Surprise and silly sounds for the youngest: nonsense words, funny voices, the reliably hilarious “poo”. Wordplay and riddles land from around six or seven, once a child can hold two meanings of a word at the same time.

My child’s jokes make no sense. Should I correct them?

No. Laugh anyway. A homemade joke that delights its author is language and confidence at play; the appreciation teaches more than any correction, and the structure arrives on its own.

What to remember

The TV show died; the point didn’t. Keep a stock of clean jokes your child can own, pitch them to the age’s actual sense of humour, let them invent nonsense of their own, and laugh at all of it. A household that laughs together is banking something the hard days will draw on.
