Many countries across the globe, particularly in Asia, are starting to ease their COVID-19 restrictions for international travel.

Recently, Japan announced that it will re-open its borders starting on the 11th of October 2022. Along with that, Taiwan aims to discard its mandatory quarantine beginning on the 13th of October after it reached the peak of its latest Omcron BA-5 outbreak.

On the other hand, Hong Kong finally joins other governments that announced the easing of their COVID-19 restrictions. Before, most people knew the country for implementing strict international travel quarantine rules.

Thanks to the lifting of formal quarantine, parents and families can now add Hong Kong back to their overseas vacation plans this 2022. With this, they can easily book quick and easy trips without setting aside extra days for quarantine.

On Friday, the Chief Executive of Hong Kong, John Lee announced the removal of quarantine at a press conference. According to him, they will now be allowing quarantine removal because the city’s infection numbers have stabilised.

“We hope to give the maximum room to reconnect Hong Kong, and to revitalize our economy,” said the chief executive.

The policy shift in Hong Kong came after Japan announced that it would allow visa-free, independent tourism and abolish its daily arrival cap.

Changes in the COVID-19 Restrictions in Hong Kong

Incoming travellers would still undergo the 3-day monitoring period. Fortunately, this time, they will be able to do their three days of self-monitoring at home or in their chosen place.

During this period, travellers will be allowed to go outside their homes or accommodation. However, they will be restricted to go in some areas in Hong Kong until the monitoring is over.

Unlike before, arrivals this time will no longer have to provide a negative PCR test before boarding a plane. They will need to present a negative rapid antigen test instead, which must be 24 hours before they board.

Aside from that, people will be assigned an amber colour under the city’s digital health code. It will prevent them to enter places like bars and restaurants while they are still under the monitoring period.

Additionally, travellers have to do PCR tests on days 2, 4, and 6 after arrival. It is also mandatory for them to undergo the RAT test every day for 7 consecutive days after arrival.
