Devoted husband seeks help for pregnant wife in Singapore who needs life-saving surgery

The couple, who have been living in Singapore for over a year, are in need of support as they still do not qualify for medical subsidy...

Filipino couple Walter and Liezl Wal have been in Singapore for over a year, after getting married in March 2016. They were expecting their first child when Liezl suddenly suffered a hemorrhagic stroke. She was 17 weeks along.

After she was rushed to the hospital, the medical staff had to perform an emergency craniotomy. She made it through the procedure, but since her condition is complicated, she was transferred to the neuroscience intensive care unit of another hospital.

Liezl, who is now in a stable condition, is undergoing therapy.

“She is undergoing physical and speech therapy,” Walter told theAsianparent in an interview. “She is under daily monitoring of her obstetrics and gynaecology regarding her pregnancy. She can eat porridge and drink water and bits of fruits. She will be staying in the hospital waiting for her upcoming surgery this 3 August 2017 since she still needs rehabilitation, daily monitoring of her baby and the brain is still open, half of the skull has been removed).”

Thankfully, based on recent tests, there have been no pregnancy complications as a result of the stroke.

“Liezl pregnancy is still ok at this moment, the baby still have heartbeat. For the baby’s overall condition, she just finished detailed scanning and she might go another detailed scanning to determine if there is no other complications of the baby,” he said.

Though they are far from home, their family in the Philippines has supported them through this ordeal.

“Our family is supporting us by providing us moral support and prayer and sourcing some funds to top up in our medical bills,” he said, but they still need more help. Since they are not permanent Singapore residents yet, they’re still not entitled to medical subsidy so “every little bit helps.” To help Liezl, Walter set up a GIVE.asia page to help with the medical expenses.

“Liezl is sweet, happy, adventurous, beautiful…”

Liezl is set to undergo another surgery on August 3, 2017 to remove the veins that caused the stroke. It will cost about $110,000 to $120,000.

In closing, Walter reflected on the many good qualities of his wife.

“Liezl is sweet, happy, adventurous, beautiful, really good at directions. She always monitors if I’m okay, if I already ate, always bring me food. She makes sure that I’m always happy. She likes to cook for our food and always waits for me for our dinner,” he shares with fondness. “She always sings out of tune which makes us both happy. She is a supportive and caring wife.”

We are hoping Liezl’s surgery is successful and that she makes a speedy recovery.
