Healthy kid-friendly V-Day treats

11 Feb, 2015

Valentine’s Day goodies don't have to be laden with sugar. Why not make these equally delicious V-Day themed treats that are kid friendly as well!

Heart-shaped PBJ

Heart-shaped PBJ

The peanut butter and jelly sandwich is a favourite snack in my household and my go-to brekkie when I was in primary school. Give this classic snack a ‘loved-up’ twist by switching the grape jelly to a red strawberry jam and add slices of strawberries as well into the sandwich. If you have the time, parents can also cut the bread into heart-shaped sandwiches.
Love jellies

Love jellies

Jelly is a relatively low-caloric dessert and incredibly easy to make. Best thing is you can customise it to suit your taste and the occasion. For this V-Day, why not make a special Cranberry-Apple jelly. All you need is some gelatin powder which you can get at most supermarkets, some cranberry apple juice (either fresh juice or a cordial), your favourite fruits to decorate and a heart-shaped mould.
Chocolate dipped fruits

Chocolate dipped fruits

Chocolates are synonymous with Valentine’s Day as is the colour red. So why not marry the two in a fun, interactive and healthy way with some chocolate dipped fruits! Use red-coloured fruits such as strawberries (they’re heart shaped too!), cherries, sliced fuji apples and raspberries. Feel free to use other fruits and even cut up some almonds or walnuts for your kids to dip their choc-covered fruits in for that extra crunch.
Yoghurt ice pops

Yoghurt ice pops

You can choose to use plain or flavoured yoghurt. I personally prefer using plain (less sugar and calories) and adding in my fruits later. For this ice pop, colour and flavour your plain or vanilla yoghurt by blending some raspberries (a great colouring agent and superb taste) into the yoghurt mixture. Once the mixture is smooth, pour it into fancy moulds (we suggest hearts or teddy bears) and leave it in the freezer for a few hours. Once it's done, you will have a healthy and yummy dessert that will please both you an your kid's taste buds!
Queen of hearts fruit skewers

Queen of hearts fruit skewers

Jazz up the regular fruit skewers this Valentine’s Day by turning it into a string of ‘hearty’ fruits. Here are some easy ways to do this: cut strawberries into halves or use a heart-shape cookie cutter to cute some melon slices. Once done, poke these through a skewer – and serve!
