You can child-proof your house all you want, but there’s no child-proofing the outside world. Trite as it may sound, the best way to protect your children—whether it’s outdoors or in a public place or anywhere, really—is still vigilance.
A graphic photo circulating on Facebook highlights this very important lesson.
It shows a crying toddler whose face is streaked with blood coming out of her right eye. As it turns out, the little girl had run into a clothes rack while they were out shopping.
The sharp edge hit her smack in the eye.
“A two-year-old wouldn’t see this as a danger,” the caption reads. “She was just happily walking with her mum and a few hours later having surgery to save her eye.”
According to the author of the original post, the little girl’s mother wants the image to circulate so that other mothers would be aware of such dangers and spare themselves of this unpleasant situation.
The little girl’s mother still doesn’t know how bad the injury is, and they still have to find out how the muscle of the eyelid heals.
This injury isn’t the first of its kind, and certainly not the last. It only highlights how important it is for parents to always keep an eye out for their children whenever they’re in an unfamiliar territory.

Keeping children safe in the mall
Going to the mall should be a positive experience for both children and parents, not filled with anxiety and worry. Here are a few tips on how you can keep children safe when you’re at the mall, as compiled by The Safest Line.
Have a meeting place
Make sure that you establish one place that your child knows and can easily get to. That way if they do get lost, they will know one place to return where they know you’ll find them.
Hug a store display
“Choose a store or mall display, and make clear that the child should wait there, even if he or she thinks it is taking a long time for the parent to come,” The Safest Line suggests. “If there’s a problem, the child should seek out a security guard or uniformed store employee.”
Hands off the merchandise
Some products on sale can physically harm children, especially breakable goods such as glass items and little things that they can choke on. Make sure they they do not touch any of them.
Move safely
Make sure that your children know that certain areas at the mall aren’t for playing, such as the escalators, elevators, and product displays. Always keep your child in your line of sight and close to you at all times.
