Ladies, it may be time to go braless!
We understand that it’s not a very Asian thing to go without a bra. Perhaps we’re just a more conservative society and prefer to conceal our breasts and nipples from ogling men on the streets. After all, some of us need that support or we might have saggy boobs as a result. Still, others need padded bras to create the illusion of being bustier because unfortunately, not all Asians are as blessed as our Western counterparts when it comes to being well-endowed.

Now, results from a 15-year study in France states that bra actually has no benefits for women. Say what?! In fact, it may actually do your breasts more harm than good over time. A sports medicine professor at the University of Franche-Comté in Besançon, Jean-Denis Rouillon revealed: “Our first results confirm the hypothesis that the bra is a false need.”. He added that “Medically, physiologically, anatomically, the breast does not benefit from being deprived of gravity. Instead, it languishes with a bra.”
How do you feel now, knowing that “the breast will gradually degrade” in those delicate, lacy push ups that require special washing instructions and that cost an exorbitant amount of dollars?
Take those bras off!?

More than 300 women between the age of 18-35 were examined and measured for this particular study conducted at the university’s hospital. In conclusion, Rouillon observed that women who went braless actually had it better—they developed more muscle tissue thus gaining natural support. When a lady dons a bra, the “restrictive material” actually prevented the growth of tissue, which will result in an accelerated sagging. Gasp! According to NY Daily News, ladies who did not wear a bra actually saw a miraculous nipple lift of 7mm annually towards the shoulder. That’s not all, boobs were firmer and stretch marks became lighter.
Wow, all that by just dropping the bra—who doesn’t want a pain-free nipple lift?

Don’t go braless just yet. The study tells us nothing about the breast size of the ladies used for the study. Obviously, the shape, size and weight of the breast matter when it comes to the decision to wear a bra. Also, Rouillon had said that regardless of what the findings say, it is not advisable for all women to go braless because the study isn’t representative of the population. Women out there who have worn bras for as long as they can remember, there is no use taking bras off now. The so-called “damage” has already taken its course.

Here’s what some Asian ladies say after understanding that wearing a bra may speed up the sagging process. So, will they, or will they not restrict themselves in bras?
- Roshni Chugani: “I would not stop wearing a bra, because then my boobs would look saggy all the time and I think this would make my body look odd and affect my confidence. Alternatively, I would not wear a bra while I am sleeping.”
- Minoli Almeida: “I have been wearing bras for so long that it has become a habit for me, so I would just continue. It just feels more comfortable and they make me feel secure as well.”
- Danni Siew: “Science has finally caught up with the feminists. I hardly wear a bra on a daily basis, it is just more free and comfortable that way.”
- Rebecca Teo: “If I had a choice, I would choose not to wear one. Bras are not exactly the most comfortable things in the world. However, society expects us to wear one, because females are expected to be reserved and modest. If we do not wear one, it might seem like an outrage of modesty. Just like how it is unprofessional to not wear wake up to work, the same social stigma stands for if women choose not to wear bras.
What do you think, mummies? Is it time to ditch the bras?
