Following this incident the principal of SJI, Reverend Father Dr Adrian Danker wrote a letter addressing the parents and guardians.

Following the horrific murder case at River Valley High School this week, comes another tragic incident. A male student from St Joseph’s Institution (SJI) reportedly fell from a height while at school today (July 22).

The school – located at located at 38 Malcolm Road– took prompt action following the fall and called the Police for assistance at about 11.39am.

Police shared that the student, who is believed to be in Secondary 3, was conscious at the time of being taken to the hospital.

Here’s what we know so far.

After the Police were informed, the officers at Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) were also activated and information about the incident was shared with them.

They took the teenage boy to KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital for immediate treatment.

So far, the police do not suspect any foul play in the matter.

As per a media statement released by SJI, the boy had fallen from a height at the common area after the recess period. Following this, the school immediately called in an ambulance.

The boy’s parents were contacted and they are currently with the child at the hospital.

The release further informed, “The boy has received medical treatment and is warded for monitoring.” The school authorities are currently not able to give more details as the police probe is currently on.

The school further urged students and their family members to stop speculating because it would hurt the sentiments of the injured student and his family.

The principal of SJI, Reverend Father Dr Adrian Danker, in another letter addressed to parents and guardians said that the school’s pastoral team and counsellors have attended to the students who witnessed the incident.

He further urged parents to monitor their kids to see if they are in any kind of distress. He asked parents to inform his or her (form tutors) if they observe their child in distress or in need of any emotional or psychological support.

The school further assured to take care of its students and support them “during this trying time and the additional safe management measures.”

Father Danker also requested parents to see that any photo or video of the injured Josephian is not shared by anyone on any platform.

Mental health is a very sensitive subject and shouldn’t be taken lightly. It is just as serious as any other health condition and we concur with Father Danker about the importance of providing emotional or psychological support to young children.

5 Ways To Boost Your Child’s Mental Health

Today kids are burdened by many things. From meeting homework deadlines, to showing up for extracurricular activities, to the pressure to excel.

To top it all, the pandemic has further added to their stress levels. With limited options of stepping out, they have been mainly confined to their rooms. This has taken a toll on several young minds.

Here are some ways to ensure good mental health of your child.

Talk to your child

This is a very important tool to help your child open up. Give undivided attention to your child, even if it is for just 5 minutes a day.

This will assure them of your support – irrespective of the subject. Ask them about their day, about their friends and what they did. Give them the confidence to share if they face any unpleasant experience or if something is troubling them by not pointing fingers at them.

Regular playtime

As parents, encourage your child to cut short their indoor time and spend outdoors playing (safely and if possible). Make them take up a sport they like and one that makes them happy.

So next time whenever you find your child hooked on the laptop, on their mobile, urge them to try something different.

Focus on a good diet

As parents, you need to focus on your child’s diet and also on their lifestyle. For instance, make sure they have a healthy dose of vegetables and fruits daily.

Indulging in junk food should be limited and occasional. Exercising is also one of the most important ways to boost your as well as your child’s mental and physical health as it increases endorphins- the happiness hormone.

Create a positive environment at home

A home is a place that should make your child feel comfortable and loved. Make sure there’s no violence or negativity that can make a child feel unsafe.

Shower them with love and values to help them grow up to confident adults. Appreciate their small achievements and watch them shine.
