Essentials of skincare every parent should knowEssentials of skincare every parent should know

Parents, are you or your family facing skincare issues? There is no need to fret. Learn from our guest mummy blogger on how to combat skincare problems. Get tips on how to manage dry and sensitive skin plus loads more.

For years, I’ve been troubled with dry skin conditions. It worsens every time I go on a vacation due to weather conditions, dry air and prolonged exposure to the sun. Chapped lips, cracked hands and flaking skins are the usual problems that I faced.

I’m glad to have attended “The Essentials of Skincare” seminar sponsored byPhysiogel last weekend. I took away valuable knowledge on common skin issues such as dry and sensitive skin, dandruff prevention, sun care protection and children’s eczema. And I’m going to share some of them in this post.

Managing Dry and Sensitive Skin

The first speaker of this seminar is Senior Consultant Dermatologist Prof. Goh Chee Leok. He gave a very interesting presentation on how to manage our dry and sensitive skins, as well as choosing the right skincare products to repair and moisturize our dry skin.

The five main factors that contribute to dry skin are the environment, poor nutrition, genetic factors, age, and bathing. Why bathing, you may ask? Healthy bathing habits can improve dry skin, but more frequent bathing can dehydrate our skin.

It sounds funny but true when Prof. Goh mentioned about how we, Singaporeans, are obsessed with bathing. I bath up to 3 times a day because I can’t stand sweat and stickiness. And now I realized that this is the main reason for why I have dry skin.

The most important point to note here is that good skin care begins with good cleansing using the right cleanser, and not to STOP bathing. We should use a mild cleanser, the less soap the better it is, and contains moisturizing ingredients to replenish those lost during cleansing.

I tried the PHYSIOGEL™ Cleanser, and I love how gentle and soap-free it is. My skin feels so soft after every shower. It’s low-foam and non-greasy formula cleanses thoroughly with or without water while maintaining our skin’s natural moisture balance. It can be used on both face and body, and it’s so mild that it can be used on babies!

Managing Dandruff and Care for Itchy Scalp

The second speaker is the gorgeous Dr. Lynn Teo from The Dermatology Practice. She debunked some myths pertaining to dandruff, i.e. dandruff is caused by a dry scalp, dandruff means you should wash your hair less often and oils are good for the scalp.

It’s interesting because I’ve always thought that dandruff is caused by a dry scalp! Now, I realized that dandruff differs from a dry scalp because dandruff usually gets better when we shampoo more frequently using the right shampoos.

To care for an itchy and flaky scalp, Dr. Lynn Teo also shared some useful tips that include daily or frequent washing, avoid styling products, decrease stress and seek medical help if the condition does not improve.

If you have a sensitive scalp, you may want to try the PHYSIOGEL™ Shampoo Plus. It is a mild shampoo for the cleansing of the sensitive scalp while keeping it moisturized. It also contains Pro-vitamin B5 (panthenol) and other hair conditioners, that provides the hair with a natural gloss and volume as well as stimulates skin cell regeneration for the healing of the skin and scalp.

Top Tips for Proper Skincare

In conjunction with this seminar, Dr. Joyce Lim, Dermatologist at Joyce Lim Skin and Laser Clinic, also shared some top tips on proper skincare.

    1. Develop a regular schedule. Cleanse and moisturize your skin daily.
    2. Choose the right cleanser. Use a gentle, soap-free cleanser with neutral pH. If you have sensitive skin, choose cleansers that leave a moisturizing film behind after washing.
    3. Use the right moisturizer that is non-comedogenic (meaning: they contain ingredients that should not clog your pores or cause more skin problems), contains lipid that repairs the skin and provides long-lasting hydration.
    4. Always apply moisturizer right after the shower to seal in the moisture. Towel dry skin but leave your skin moist for better absorption.
    5. Learn about common ingredients that go into our skincare products. Some ingredients like alcohol and fragrance can irritate sensitive skin, while ingredients like glycerin help to hold water in the skin.
    6. Always remove all make-up before going to bed. Make-up left overnight will clog pores and dehydrate our skin.
    7. Lastly, sleep well, eat well and drink lots of water!
