A doctor faces multiple charges after taking advantage of different sedated patients; he also awaits conviction for a medical malpractice case.

The Brazillian anaesthetist will be facing multiple charges for taking advantage of his sedated patients. The case that unveiled his cruel acts happened during a C-section surgery of a mum.

Doctor Faces Multiple Charges for Taking Advantage of Sedated Patients

On the 10th of July, the authorities arrested Giovanni Quintella Bezerra, a 32-year-old doctor accused of raping a sedated patient. The victim was a barely-conscious pregnant mum that he sedated for a C-section surgical procedure.

They put the doctor under arrest in Rio de Janeiro. The arrest happened after nurses noticed the doctor’s suspicious behaviour during two C-sections operations on the same day.

The nurses then decided to record him during the third C-section surgical procedure. Allegedly, they then discovered that the doctor was assaulting the sedated mum.

Police Uncovered the Doctor’s Multiple Abuse Cases

The police began investigating if the first two patients had also become the doctor’s victims. After the incident, three more women reached out to authorities. They accused the doctor of sexual abuse. Because of this, authorities learned he had a total of 6 victims.

Giovanni Bezerra had his first appearance in court last Tuesday. The judge sentenced him to indefinite detention in solitary confinement while the case was ongoing.

The authorities detained him at Bangu – Brazil’s largest prison complex west of Rio. As soon as he arrived in the prison, other prisoners started booing him and banging their cell bars.

The Doctor Also Faces Medical Malpractice Lawsuit

Aside from the six rape charges filed against Giovanni Bezerra, authorities discovered that he is also facing a medical malpractice lawsuit. The case was filed in 2018 before he qualified as an anaesthetist. This also happened when he worked at a different hospital

Back then, he was with another doctor when they are accused of misdiagnosing a case of swine flu as a urinary tract infection. Bezerra’s misdiagnosis caused the female patient to fail into a 23-day coma.

The patient lost her big toe while she was in a coma. Aside from that, she sustained severe damage to her Achilles tendon and lost much of her hair.

The woman suffered delusions, chills, difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, coughing, and dizziness. She arrived in the hospital back then feeling all these, but Bezerra said it was a UTI.  He then gave her an antibiotic to treat her health condition, ignoring the possibility of a severe condition.

The case was brought for medical malpractice, with investigations in the early stages.

He Sexually Assaulted Pregnant Patients

Giovanni Bezerra only received his qualification as an anaesthetist after passing in April this year. Since then, he received accusations of using his position to carry out horrifying acts against pregnant women just months later.

Concerning this, the police suspect that he carries out not just one but possibly a series of rape on pregnant women.

Giovanni Bezerra allegedly sedated the pregnant woman in the case that led to arresting him. During that time, the victim was undergoing a C-section, and she was barely conscious.

According to experts, the levels of sedation that Bezerra did are uncommon during routine procedures. Medical practitioners only use it on patients in distress or where they may resist attempts to operate on them.

The Nurses Become Suspicious of His Behavior

As an anaesthetist, Giovanni Bezerra’s position has to be near the patient’s head. On one occasion, Bezerra positioned himself near the woman’s head. His gown was arranged in a position where the rest of the medical team could not see her neck up.

After that, Bezerra allegedly rapes the patient for around 10 minutes. During that time, he was intimidating a nurse who tried to get close to him.

The nurses then set up a phone nearby the glass cabinet to record him in hopes of confirming their suspicions. Afterwards, they reviewed the footage and called the authorities.

In the clip, Bezerra moves his arm back and forth. It seemed he pushed and pulled the patient’s head towards his crotch.

After what Bezerra did, the video shows how he cleaned the woman’s mouth with gauze. The nurses then called the police and said they suspected Giovanni Bezerra’s behaviour. The doctor has been using unusually heavy sedation on the patients for a month now.

When the victim saw the footage, she recalled the gruesome assault. However, she thought that she was hallucinating at that time. The authorities are still collecting evidence against the doctor.
