Have you heard of cupping? This treatment has been around for thousands of years and is still a popular choice. But, how effective is it as an alternative treatment ?
What is Cupping?
Cupping or cupping therapy is a traditional medical technique that uses special cups to suck out dirty blood using a special cup.
This method is believed to be able to remove toxins from the body, improve blood flow and help with various health problems naturally.
There are two types:
- Dry cupping – Using cups to suction the skin without injury.
- Wet cupping – Involves making small, fine cuts in the skin before sucking out the blood.
This technique originated in the ancient Egyptian, Chinese and Middle Eastern civilizations, but is now gaining more attention around the world, including in Malaysia.
Perspectives on Cupping
Cupping is often associated with Islamic treatment as it has been practiced since the time of Prophet Muhammad SAW. In fact, in traditional Chinese medicine, it is also used to overcome energy imbalances in the body.
It is believed to help regulate the flow of energy (chi) in the body and balance the elements of yin and yang. It has a concept that is very similar to acupuncture treatment .
In this procedure, special cups are placed on the skin and negative pressure is created in two ways:
- Old Technique: Using fire to create suction in a cup.
- Modern Technique: Using a vacuum suction device.
This cup will be left for approximately 3 minutes.

The effectiveness of this method is still a matter of debate in the world of modern medicine. While many individuals report positive changes, more in-depth scientific studies are still needed to confirm its long-term effects.
However, if you want to try it, make sure:
- Choose a cupping center that is registered and uses sterile equipment.
- Do not take it if you have certain health problems such as blood clotting disorders.
