Cupping: Types, Benefits & Is It an Effective Alternative Treatment for Health?

The health benefits of cupping are said to help improve blood circulation, relieve body pain and remove toxins from the body.

What is Cupping?

Cupping or cupping therapy is a traditional medical technique that uses special cups to suck out dirty blood using a special cup.

This method is believed to be able to remove toxins from the body, improve blood flow and help with various health problems naturally.

There are two types:

  • Dry cupping – Using cups to suction the skin without injury.
  • Wet cupping – Involves making small, fine cuts in the skin before sucking out the blood.

This technique originated in the ancient Egyptian, Chinese and Middle Eastern civilizations, but is now gaining more attention around the world, including in Malaysia.

Perspectives on Cupping

Cupping is often associated with Islamic treatment as it has been practiced since the time of Prophet Muhammad SAW. In fact, in traditional Chinese medicine, it is also used to overcome energy imbalances in the body.

It is believed to help regulate the flow of energy (chi) in the body and balance the elements of yin and yang. It has a concept that is very similar to acupuncture treatment .

In this procedure, special cups are placed on the skin and negative pressure is created in two ways:

  • Old Technique: Using fire to create suction in a cup.
  • Modern Technique: Using a vacuum suction device.

This cup will be left for approximately 3 minutes.

What are the Benefits of Cupping?

Many individuals who practice it claim to have experienced positive changes after treatment. Here are some of the commonly cited benefits of cupping:

1. Promotes Blood Circulation

Cupping helps increase blood flow to problem areas, supplying oxygen and nutrients for recovery and reducing inflammation.

2. Relieves Muscle and Joint Pain

The pressure from the cups helps to stretch tense muscles, reduce stiffness and stimulate the release of endorphins to relieve pain.

3. Helps with Migraine Problems

Some individuals find that cupping helps reduce the frequency of their headaches .

4. Reduces Stress and Tension

Stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, providing a relaxing effect like a massage, thus helping to reduce stress and anxiety.

5. Helps Reduce Toxins in the Body

Wet cupping is said to help remove dirty blood , support liver and kidney function, but the effects are different for each individual.

Are There Any Side Effects of Cupping?

Like any other treatment, cupping also has risks if not performed correctly. Cleanliness of the equipment is very important to prevent infection.

If equipment is not sterilized, it can increase the risk of blood-borne diseases such as:

  • HIV/AIDS
  • Hepatitis B & C

Although it is usually safe when performed by a trained professional, some side effects may occur, such as:

  • Discomfort or pain in the cupped area
  • Skin burns (if using fire techniques)
  • Bruise
  • Skin infections
  • Dizziness or feeling like you might faint
  • Excessive bleeding

Therefore, it is important to get this treatment from a certified specialist and ensure good hygiene is maintained.

Are These Alternative Treatments Effective?

The effectiveness of this method is still a matter of debate in the world of modern medicine. While many individuals report positive changes, more in-depth scientific studies are still needed to confirm its long-term effects.

However, if you want to try it, make sure:

  • Choose a cupping center that is registered and uses sterile equipment.
  • Do not take it if you have certain health problems such as blood clotting disorders.
  • Talk to your doctor before trying it, especially if you are undergoing other medical treatments.

If done correctly, cupping can be a beneficial alternative treatment option!

So, have you ever tried cupping? Or would you like to try it in the future?
