People today, really don’t pay much attention to the superstitions of ancient times, but during the period of Chinese New Year, even the most cynical minded person does usually relent and try to follow some of the dos and don’ts in order to welcome “good” and keep evil as far away as possible, in the coming new year.

It is a popular thought, that most superstitions were concocted to keep people in line, however upon closer inspection, some of these superstitions do have their positive and beneficial merits.

The following superstitions are worth considering for just this purpose, as certain customs and processes are simply not worth disregarding, as any future misfortune will be laid squarely on your shoulders.

Although in most countries today, firecrackers are banned due to their danger elements, the loud noises of the firecracker is said to be a way of saying goodbye to the old year while being ready to welcome the goodness of the new year.

Perhaps you could try substituting this with a lot of happy soEven the art of cleaning during the festive season has to be carefully adhered to. Nothing should be swept out through the front door as this action is interpreted as sweeping out good fortune.

The sweeping exercise should ideally start from the entrance of the home and eventually end up at the back, but even then, the swept up elements should not be thrown into the garbage immediately, but instead, kept in a corner and not trampled upon.

At the appropriate time, the dust and dirt can be thrown out, without causing the family’s good fortune to be disturbed or lost.unds instead, laughter and music should make a good and happy substitute.

Abstaining from eating meat on the first day of Chinese New Year is usually quite widely practised, and this is really quite a sensible concession, as you will probably be eating a lot of meat dished for the rest of the festive season. This abstinence is supposed to help bring about a long and happy life.

Any spring cleaning exercise, should be done just before New Year’s day, as any cleaning done on, such as auspicious day will drive away any new and good luck meant to be bestowed upon the household and its occupants.

Bright red is the ideal colour for the celebration period. It is a happy and vibrant colour, which is supposed to attract good fortune and a bright future. Black is certainly a "no-no" which is thought to bring doom and gloom.

Balancing your "books" and trying to ensure you start the new year in the "blue" is said to keep you from staying in debt in the New Year. So pay off all you owe, before ushering in the New Year.


Negative stories

Negative stories

Ghost stories, tales of death and other negative and scary topics should be diligently avoided. This is considered to be the ultimate inauspicious thing to do during this season.

Talking about such negative elements is a keen, to inviting these elements into your midst, and that is not something anyone wants.
