Breastfeeding twins - is it possible? How can I better support my wife?

Breastfeeding twins - is it possible? How can I better support my wife?

Having a twin? Congratulations. Here is your guide to breastfeeding twins and what daddies can do to support their wife on this journey.

Yes, it is possible to breastfeed twins. In fact breastfeeding twins is especially important as twins are often small at birth and need all the health advantages nursing provides.

Frequent suckling can provide enough milk for two babies. One breast, when frequently emptied, can provide enough milk for one baby.

It is also a good idea to purchase a twin nursing pillow to use when breastfeeding twins. Some popular brands amongst Singaporean mums include the Breast friend twin nursing pillow, milkbar twin pillow and Twin Z BF.

How do I support my wife on her breastfeeding twins journey?

The biggest issues for mothers of twins are getting enough sleep, keeping up with minimal housework, finding outlets for negative feelings, and avoiding isolation. Your and support may mean the difference between “making it” or “falling apart” for your wife. Here is a short list of tips for twin daddies to be who want to help their wife on their breastfeeding journey.

  • Take full paternity leave and additional unpaid leave if possible
  • Protect her from "annoying" family members
  • Be in charge of changing the babies’ diapers.
  • Watch the babies while mummy sleeps.
  • Offer wife a back rub/foot massage while she nurses.
  • Constantly bring her fluids so she is not dehydrated
  • Ensure she has lunch and dinner prepared
  • If baby needs to nurse in the middle of the night, change him and then bring him to your wife while she is in bed. When the next baby wakes up, switch them.
  • Listen to your wife if she is scared, tired, or overwhelmed, and hold her if she needs to cry. Tell her you love her.
  • Take over all household tasks and grocery shopping.
  • Tell your wife what a good job she’s doing with her babies. She needs support and encouragement; don’t give advice when she complains or seems tired.

Need Breastfeeding Help? Don't fret!

When in doubt, please refer to a lactation consultant, who can offer you more personalised advice according to you and your baby's situation.
