Another unfortunate case of an escalator accident has happened in Singapore over the weekend.
A five-year-old boy’s foot was trapped in the first-storey escalator of the National Library around 6pm yesterday, causing the escalator to stop.
Witnesses said that the boy had been travelling down the escalator with his parents when his foot got caught at the bottom, prompting members of the public to rush forward to help the boy.
His foot had already been freed by the time officers from the Singapore Civil Defence Force arrived.
The boy was then taken to KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital, fully conscious. He was lightly injured.
A spokesman for the National Library said that their staff had gone to the hospital to visit the boy and his parents, and will continue to provide support.
As escalator accidents can happen at any time, here are some tips on how to keep your children safe on escalators:
- Hold your children’s hands when stepping on and stepping off the escalator, and throughout the duration of the journey.
- Ensure shoelaces are tied before stepping onto the escalator.
- Be very careful with loose or long clothing.
- Ensure that your children do not stand too close to the sides.
- Carry your children, especially if their coordination has not yet fully developed, or lift them up when stepping on and off the escalator.
- Always keep an eye on your children.
