10 best (and worst!) story books for kids written by celebrities

29 Sep, 2015

Celebrities can do most everything they want including writing story books for kids. Some have managed to publish interesting, insightful stories. Others, however, are best kept off the shelf.

Check out our list of the best and worst celebrity-authored story books for kids. You may just find a few new books to add to your little one’s library.

Best: "How Roland Rolls" by Jim Carrey

Best: "How Roland Rolls" by Jim Carrey

This is the story of a wave named Roland who fears the day that he will hit the sandy beach, believing that this will be the end of his life. He later realises that he is not just a wave but he is the whole wide ocean.

"How Roland Rolls" helps teach children about courage and facing up to life's challenges.

Best: "Freckleface Strawberry" by Julianne Moore

Best: "Freckleface Strawberry" by Julianne Moore

The Freckleface Strawberry books prove that Julianne Moore isn’t only an amazing actress, but she is also a great author. Her New York Times Bestseller about a little girl who learns to live with her freckles is so well-loved that it was even turned into a stage play at the Manhattan Movement and Arts Center.

This story teaches children about loving and accepting yourself, flaws and all.

Worst: "Rock Steady: A Story of Noah's Ark" by Sting

Worst: "Rock Steady: A Story of Noah's Ark" by Sting

International music star Sting took the lyrics of one of his popular songs and turned it into a children’s book that tells the story of Noah’s Ark with a creative twist.

The story veers away from the original story in the bible, possibly causing confusion among children who are only beginning to study religion.

Best: "Tell Me Again About the Night I Was Born" by Jamie Lee Curtis

Best: "Tell Me Again About the Night I Was Born" by Jamie Lee Curtis

"Tell Me Again About the Night I Was Born" is a heartwarming story of a young girl who asks her adoptive parents to tell her all about the night she was born.

This story paints a beautiful picture of family, love, and acceptance.

Worst: "If Roast Beef Could Fly" by Jay Leno

Worst: "If Roast Beef Could Fly" by Jay Leno

In this book for kids, comedian Jay Leno tells a true story from his childhood using his signature stand-up humour.

Unfortunately, this type of humour is better off targeted at an older crowd and the storytelling is something that children may not fully appreciate.

Best: "The English Roses" by Madonna

Best: "The English Roses" by Madonna

"The English Roses" is about a group of girls who are envious of another girl, Binah, and so they exclude her from their activities and parties. The girls eventually find out that Binah's life is not at all easy. They realise how lucky they are and eventually accept Binah into their circle.

This story, which targets older children, teaches them not to judge others, to look beyond appearances, and to appreciate what they already have. Bonus: It's illustrated beautifully, too.

Worst: "Dad, Are You the Tooth Fairy" by Jason Alexander

Worst: "Dad, Are You the Tooth Fairy" by Jason Alexander

In this story, a father attempts to answer his young son's questions about the existence of the Tooth Fairy without spoiling his belief in magic.

This may not be a good bedtime story choice unless you would like to get into the same discussion with your own kids.

Best: "I Already Know I Love You" by Billy Crystal

Best: "I Already Know I Love You" by Billy Crystal

This book is about a grandfather who shares all the things he is looking forward to as he eagerly anticipates the arrival of his grandchild. It is a touching story that shows how much love a grandparent can have for a child.

Worst: "Propeller One-Way Night Coach: A Fable for All Ages" by John Travolta

Worst: "Propeller One-Way Night Coach: A Fable for All Ages" by John Travolta

According to an early review of this book by celebrated actor John Travolta, he originally wrote this book and gave it away to 75 of his closest friends and family members.

Unfortunately when it was finally published for public consumption, this story about an 8-year-old boy's first plane ride received less than rave reviews. It also isn't a fable despite being called one in the title.

Worst: "Dennis the Wild Bull" by Dennis Rodman

Worst: "Dennis the Wild Bull" by Dennis Rodman

This story book for kids by NBA legend, Dennis Rodman, is about a bull who stood out because of his flamboyance and style. When he is kidnapped and made to work in a rodeo, he uses his uniqueness to get him back home to his family.

While the story does have a moral lesson, the main character is patterned after Rodman, who may not necessarily be the best role model for kids.
