The Excursion of Big Hands Small Hands!

The Excursion of Big Hands Small Hands!

Welcome to this brand-new series here at theAsianParent - The Excursion of Big Hands Small Hands! Here we follow the travel adventures of the Singapore family, composed of Sean (Dad), Tun Ling (Mom) and two young children, Yi Xi, two and Yi Ken, five. The adventurous family will be updating us - in their own words - as they travel across Asia and Europe.

They left their home in Singapore in March 2015 and have been travelling for more than nine months since. During the first five months, they have backpacked in South Korea, Japan, China, Mongolia, Russia, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. They already have plans to do bike touring in Europe, so when they were in Moscow, they were searching online for second hand equipment needed for bike touring.

After some effort, they bought a child trailer and panniers from Latvia and a tandem bicycle from Lithuania. They went to Finland by ferry from Estonia where they based themselves in a long time Finnish friend's home to rest and prepare for the cycling leg of the travel.

On 1st August 2015, they took an overnight train to Rovaniemi, near the Arctic Circle where they began their bike touring. They have visited Santa Claus in Santa Claus Village and Nordkapp, the northernmost point of Europe, in Norway.

The family spent about six weeks cycling in Finnish Lapland and Northern Norway, and then flew to the Tuzla, Bosnia to continue their travel in the Balkans. They have cycled in Bosnia, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia. Along the way, they have also used the buses, trains and ferries to cover some distances, particularly to cross mountains, seas and when the weather gets too harsh for cycling. They are currently back to Albania where they would take a ferry to Italy.

From Italy, they will continue the travel by backpacking as it would be too cold to be cycling in winter. This will mark the last leg of their journey before returning home. They intend to visit Austria, Poland, Germany, Belgium and lastly Holland, where they will fly back to Singapore.

First flight

First flight

Our flight out from Changi to Incheon, South Korea. First flight for this baby, Yixi. Thankfully, she slept like one too.
Wonder in wandering

Wonder in wandering

Our boy, Yiken, had flown before when he was between one and two years old. Now at five, he has his own seat. It must be fascinating to be looking out of the window wondering about the many "how" of our technologies and our world.
Camping at the airport

Camping at the airport

We messed up. Our friends in Seoul couldn't come pick us up. We had arrived late and the train and bus services had stopped for the day. Unwilling to spend a bomb on taxi, we decided to "camp" in the airport.
Waking up at the airport

Waking up at the airport

Sleeping soundly in the departure hall of Incheon airport amid the bustle the next morning
Tongin local market

Tongin local market

Our first couchsurfing host, Soyoung, brought us to Tongin local market. We used Korean won to exchange for tokens and trays, which in turn were used to buy food. We could select different food items from different stalls.
Local food

Local food

This little one is fascinated by the variety of food available at the local market.
Biggest strawberry

Biggest strawberry

Tasted the sweetest strawberry ever, huge, fresh and organic. Home grown from Soyoung's grandmother's garden.
Common love for dogs

Common love for dogs

It was Yixi's first close encounter with a dog and we realized that she adores Soyoung's dog, Vic Vic, very much. She will stroke, hug and even kiss her. Soyoung's father likes Yixi very much, even though they don't speak any common language.
Communicating as best as we could

Communicating as best as we could

Soyoung's mother could not speak English and we could not speak Korean. We had some difficulties communicating with her.
Naps on the go

Naps on the go

Yiken used to attend a childcare centre before we started traveling and he is used to taking an afternoon nap. By 4pm, he could not walk anymore and needed his nap. So, during our first two weeks in Korea, we were looking for long benches in restaurants for Yiken to take his two-hour naps. Yixi is able to take her nap on the go as Tun Ling is carrying her using a carrier.

Come back for this family's next adventures!
