When new parents embark on their journey of parenthood in Singapore, they quickly realize that their tiny bundle of joy comes with a substantial list of essential items. Among the most crucial items on that list is the perfect baby crib.
Navigating the vast array of crib options and features can be a daunting task for new parents. They must consider whether the crib will fit comfortably in their HDB flat if it is safe enough to withstand their little one’s adventurous attempts to escape, and most importantly, if it will provide them with a few precious hours of uninterrupted sleep.
Many Singaporean parents face the challenge of limited space in their cosy BTO flats, making it essential to find a crib that can adapt to their living situation without compromising on quality or safety. Convertible cribs have become increasingly popular, as they can transform from a crib to a toddler bed, saving both space and money in the long run.
One feature that has proven to be a game-changer for many parents is a crib with a built-in storage drawer. This convenient addition allows parents to keep diapers, wipes, and other essentials within arm’s reach, eliminating the need to stumble around in the middle of the night. When sleep deprivation and a crying baby are involved, every second counts.
Of course, safety remains the top priority when it comes to choosing a crib for a precious little one. Parents should look for cribs with sturdy construction, non-toxic materials, and adherence to safety standards.
This ensures that their baby can sleep soundly and securely, providing parents with peace of mind and perhaps even a chance to enjoy a cup of kopi in peace.
As Singaporean parents embark on the crib-hunting adventure, they can rest assured that with a little research and some helpful tips, they will find the perfect crib that meets their needs, fits their space, and gives both baby and parents the rest they deserve.

- Safety First
- A sturdy baby crib with slats on all four sides prevents your little one from falling or getting out of bed, reducing the risk of accidents.
- Cribs come with firm mattresses, ensuring your baby sleeps soundly and safely, following the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) safe sleep recommendations.
- As noted by Lambs & Ivy, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends using a crib as the safest sleeping surface for newborns.
- Perfect for Newborns
- A baby crib is the ideal sleeping space for a newborn, providing a secure and comfortable environment.
- Infants should be placed on their back in their own sleep space, without blankets, pillows, or bumpers that may cause suffocation or strangulation.
- Space-Saving Solution
- In space-constrained Singaporean homes, a baby crib is a compact and efficient option for your little one’s sleeping arrangements.
- Many cribs come with built-in storage drawers, allowing you to keep essentials close at hand without cluttering your room.
- Grows with Your Child
- Most babies sleep in a crib until they are three years old, making it a worthwhile investment.
- Convertible cribs can transform into toddler beds, extending their usefulness and saving you money in the long run.
- Convertible cribs are a popular option as they can transition into toddler beds and day beds as your child grows older. As highlighted by Lambs & Ivy, this allows you to invest in a single piece of nursery furniture that can last for years, providing great value.
- Peace of Mind
- Knowing your baby is sleeping in a safe, secure, and comfortable environment can give you peace of mind as a parent.
- Avoid using sarongs or cradles for sleeping, as they do not provide proper support for your baby’s head and may pose safety risks.
With their safety features, sleep-promoting design, and long-lasting value, it’s no surprise that cribs remain a nursery essential for families across Singapore and beyond. Studies have investigated providing safe sleep devices like cribs to families, showing improved adherence to safe sleep recommendations.
How to Choose the Best Baby Cot in Singapore
Your little one will be using a baby cot until he or she is about three years old. Hence, it is important to get the right one. Here are some points to consider when buying a baby cot:
No sharp edges.
A safe baby cot in Singapore or any other country should not have any sharp edges. This feature poses a safety risk to your baby or toddler. It also makes their nap or sleep time uncomfortable.
Adjustable base.
An adjustable base allows you to change the mattress height as your baby grows. This prevents the baby from being able to crawl or climb out, which can result in accidents and injury.
Ideally, the best baby cot’s rail should be 26 inches above the baby cot mattress and have an adjustable base height to ensure the baby’s safety.
Proper width between cot slats.
The space between cot slats or bars shouldn’t be too wide. You shouldn’t be able to fit a soda can through them.
Non-toxic material.
The crib should be made with non-toxic materials and should have non-toxic teething rails so that the baby doesn’t chew on the wood.
Sturdy and lightweight.
When you shake the crib, ensure that the baby cot does not wobble. It should also be lightweight so that it is easy to move from one room to another.
Wheels can be locked.
Parents will usually want to get a crib with wheels so it is easy to move. However, when the baby cot is stationary, ensure that the wheels can be firmly locked to prevent accidents.
Avoid buying second-hand.
Secondhand equipment could be outdated, broken, or improperly repaired. Hence, always try to buy a brand-new baby cot in Singapore.

Tips for Using a Baby Crib
As you set up your nursery with your baby cribs, here are some things to take note of:
Consider where you will place the baby cot in the nursery.
If you are placing the crib near a window and there are Venetian blinds, either shorten the cords or anchor them somewhere so that your baby won’t be able to reach and get ahold of the blinds.
If possible, simply avoid placing the crib near the window, for your baby’s safety.
Managing blankets and bumper pads.
With the incidents of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), you want to avoid blankets as they could put your baby at risk of suffocation.
If you’re worried about your baby getting cold, it’s better to put your baby in a frog suit, a sleeper, or a swaddle.
Bumper pads, if not secured properly, may result in the risk of your baby slipping between the mattress and bumpers, eventually suffocating.
But if you are using bumper pads, they should be anchored in at least 8 places – one in each corner of the crib and at least 2 spaced evenly on each of the sides.
There should be 16 times in total, for the top and the bottom.
Taking Care of Your Baby Crib at Home
So, here’s the thing — when I became a parent, one of the first big-ticket items I had to wrap my head around was buying a baby crib.
It’s not just a fancy piece of furniture, it’s like my little one’s personal castle.
I wanted it to be safe, comfy, and durable. And best believe, I learned a lot on this journey!
Regular Cleaning Your Baby Crib
Once that crib was in my home, I realized cleaning it wasn’t just a once-in-a-blue-moon kind of thing. It needed regular TLC (tender loving care).
So, armed with a mild, baby-safe cleaner every week, I’d wipe down the entire crib to keep dust and germs at bay.
And let me tell you, those removable and washable covers are a lifesaver!
5 Easy-Peasy Steps to Keep Your Baby Crib Squeaky Clean!
- Declutter and Dust: Clear out the crib and banish those dust bunnies with a microfiber cloth or duster. Don’t forget the nooks and crannies!
- Wash Bedding Bliss: Strip off the sheets, toss ’em in the wash with baby-friendly detergent, and let the spinning magic begin!
- Spot-Clean Stains: Target those pesky stains on the mattress with a damp cloth and mild soap. Scrub-a-dub-dub, but hold the bleach!
- Disinfect for Delight: Spritz the mattress with a baby-safe disinfectant spray and let it work its germ-busting charm. No wiping is needed!
- Air It Out: Let the crib and mattress bask in the fresh air and sunshine to dry completely. Goodbye, moisture; hello, sweet dreams!
A clean crib is a happy crib, and a happy crib means a happy baby (and even happier parents!). Now, go forth and conquer those messes with a smile!
Spotting Damage
I also turned into a bit of a detective, inspecting the crib regularly for any signs of damage.
Loose screws, splintered wood, peeling paint, broken slats — they all went on my most-wanted list. If I spotted anything amiss, I’d fix it immediately.
Trust me, crib safety is a real concern. A study even found that over 9,500 injuries related to cribs are reported each year in the U.S. alone.
Growing Baby, Lower Crib
Another thing I learned? As my baby grew, the crib had to adapt. When my little one started sitting up, down went the mattress height.
This helped prevent any impromptu climbing or falling out of the crib. It’s all about keeping things safe, folks.
Avoiding Baby Crib Overload
I also had to learn to resist the urge to turn the crib into a mini playpen. Toys, blankets, pillows — they might look cute but can pose a suffocation risk.
Plus, all that extra weight can strain the crib structure over time.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends keeping the crib as bare as possible to ensure safety.
Repurposing or Storing Your Baby Crib
When my kiddo outgrew the crib, it was time for the next phase. Some cribs convert into toddler beds, which is a pretty cool feature.
But if you’re thinking of storing it, remember to dismantle it carefully, label the parts, and store them in a cool, dry place.
So there you have it, my personal crib tales! With a bit of care and attention, your baby’s crib can remain safe and serve you well for years.
Trust me, it’s all worth it when you see your little one sleeping peacefully in their crib.
