Baby survives after pregnant mother is slaughtered in a car crash

Baby survives after pregnant mother is slaughtered in a car crash

Mere seconds before her death, she still managed to save the life of her little one.

There are situations in life that are just simply outside our control.

We may be able to control our lives to a certain degree, but not the lives or the actions of those around us.

Especially in the case of 22-year-old Sarah Piano, who was killed in a car accident when a stolen car slammed into the sedan she was driving. The impact did not immediately kill her, but she died soon thereafter. She was 32 weeks pregnant.

Sarah had just dropped off her partner to work when it happened.

The doctors failed to save her life, they did manage to save her unborn child, now in intensive care. The baby was named Caleb, and he has a bigger brother, who also happened to be in the car at the time of the the accident and survived.

Greater risk

Remember that pregnant women are at greater risk behind the wheel. You should drive only when absolutely necessary, and in such cases there should be a safety checklist that you should conscientiously follow. NCT suggests the following:

  • Always wear your seatbelt when driving whilst pregnant, unless you have been given an exemption certificate from your GP.
  • When putting on your seatbelt, make sure the top part goes over your collarbone and between your breasts, whilst the lower strap lies across your thighs and hips and under your bump.
  • Avoid long distance travel during pregnancy if possible. If you do have to go on a long journey, try and share the driving with someone else.
  • In the event that you find yourself in an accident, immediately contact your doctor. You may not be injured, but your pregnancy is still at risk. And it would do you and your baby a favor to make sure that that everything is all all right.
