Things You Should Look for When Attending Primary Schools' Open House

It's almost back to school season, parents! Attending a primary school open house can help you decide if a primary school is for your child.

The first thing you can go excited about back to school is the primary schools’ open house! Of course, going back to school can be really stressful and sometimes anxious because of many things you should remember for your kid. Attending an open house can help you with that. The school’s open house is when the school opens its door to its students and parents so they can explore the school’s place and learning environment before actually registering.

Why should you attend a primary school’s open house?

To encourage you in attending an open house, we listed the reasons why it is important to join one:

  • This will allow you to study their curriculum and if it suits your child’s interests and needs.
  • You can familiarise yourself and your child with the school’s learning environment.
  • An event like this will give you an opportunity to connect and bond with other parents that can be helpful for your child’s schooling later on.
  • You can meet the teachers and staff for the first time and talk about how you can help them improve the collaboration between you and them.
  • It will help you voice your concerns easily in the future because you already know how the school works.

What to look for when attending primary schools’ open house?

  1. School’s standards – You can look for the school’s standards when it comes to delivering education to their students. It is important that you know how teachers and other programs will be implemented for your children’s learning.
  2. Know the school’s policies – Since you are in the open house already, you should know the school’s policies including dress code and other instructions that are needed to follow.
  3. Be knowledgeable about the school’s curriculum – Each school has its own standards when it comes to the subjects and lessons it will give to its students. You should look for their curricula in order for you to know if it suits your child’s needs and interests.
  4. Ask for the class schedules – This is also the right time to ask for the class schedules. You can discuss with the teachers how recess, lunch, or breaks will be scheduled in their day-to-day class. By this way, you will know if you need to pack an extra lunch, and when you should send or fetch your child.
  5. Find out all school events – Your children should not be focused on academics only, they also need to have extra curricular activities that will help them improve different areas of development for them. Look for events like recitals, plays, and other special events that your kid might be interested in.
  6. Get the contact details of key persons in school – You can also ask for their contact details like telephone numbers or email addresses so that you know who to tap with if you would voice out concerns or in case of any emergency.
