The news of the rise in animal cruelty cases in Singapore has left many of us deeply saddened and heartbroken. For many of us, our pets are more than just animals – our family members, loyal companions, and best friends. The thought of these innocent animals being neglected, abused, or abandoned is heart-wrenching.
Animal Cruelty and Welfare or Lack Thereof
According to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), the number of reported cases of animal cruelty and welfare issues rose by 44 per cent in 2022, with 511 cases investigated by their Inspectorate. This is the highest number of cases recorded in the last three years, and the trend has continued into 2023, with 229 cases reported and investigated in just the first three months alone.
What is even more concerning is the increase in the number of cases involving youth. In 2022, seven cases involved youth, compared to only one in previous years. This is a worrying trend, and this issue needs to be addressed and provided guidance and support to the younger generation.
SPCA’s work investigating these cases and providing support and guidance to animal welfare issues is commendable. However, it is not just the responsibility of SPCA to tackle this issue – it is the responsibility of all of us as a society.
The rise in animal cruelty cases is a call to action, and it is time for us to take a stand and speak out against this heinous act. It is not just about punishing the offenders but about educating the public about the importance of animal welfare and ensuring that animals are treated with kindness and respect.

Animal Abandonment and Other Issues
There’s also the pressing issue of animal abandonment, which has also increased. It is heartbreaking to think about these innocent animals left to fend for themselves on the streets, with little to no chance of survival. SPCA rescued 96 abandoned animals in 2022; between January and March 2023, they rescued 81. Most were small animals like hamsters, rabbits, and guinea pigs.
Cats falling from heights is another issue that SPCA deals with, with six to eight cases occurring weekly. Seeing these animals injured and helpless is a painful sight, and taking measures to prevent such incidents is vital.
There’s so much to do to ensure the welfare of animals -like speaking out against animal cruelty, reporting animal abuse, and supporting animal welfare organizations like SPCA. We must also educate the younger generation about the importance of animal welfare and instil a sense of compassion and empathy towards animals.
Our pets are not just animals – they are a part of our family. They bring us joy, comfort, and companionship; we must ensure they are treated with love and respect. We cannot allow these innocent creatures to be neglected, abused, or abandoned.
