7 Jan, 2016

Luxury cars, designer clothes, precious gems and more - check out our list of obnoxiously extravagant presents some rich and famous parents have given to their lucky, pampered children!

Absolutely ridiculous gifts parents get for their kids

Our children are our pride and joy and as parents we only want the best for them, so we buy them little gifts every now and then, or surprise them with a super big present on their birthday or other special occasions.

But how much are you really willing to spend on your kids and where do you draw the line when it comes to showering them with lavish gifts which are borderline ostentatious?

Check out our list of ridiculous gifts given to lucky pampered kids of celebrities and other wealthy parents who clearly have too much extra money to spend!

S$69 million diamond

S$69 million diamond

Remember back when you were a little girl and you longed to have a sparkly diamond ring just like the one your mother wore, but you were content enough to parade around your candy Ring Pop instead?

Well, Hong Kong billionaire Joseph Lau, didn’t think twice about buying his seven year old daughter Josephine a 12.03-carat diamond ring worth S$69 million!

The world’s most expensive diamond now belongs to a Primary Schooler – and here we are telling our own children that $69 for a talking Carebear is daylight robbery!

US$24k Victorian playhouse

US$24k Victorian playhouse

Our version of a playhouse back when we were kids was cutting out windows and a door on a large cardboard box and using our wild imaginations as we played with our next door neighbours.

But the cute daughter of Hollywood ex-couple, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, has a fabulous Grand Victorian Playhouse which comes complete with running water, electricity, intercom which connects to the main house, and other cool customisable features that are even more modern than our own humble HDB flats.

For that amount of money, we can put a down payment on a new house here in Singapore!

S$30k Rolex Cellini watch

Which brand of watch would you give to your child as a gift? Casio? Flik Flak? Swatch? Baby G?

Atwell Tay, who works in the auto industry and is also a broker who deals with oil investments has always been showered with luxurious gifts from his businessman dad and mum who works in the finance industry – but one of the most expensive watches he has ever received from them is a S$30,000 Rolex Cellini to add to his impressive collection of 24 timepieces from Rolex, Breitling, Hublot, U-boat and others.

Wow, and back in our Secondary school days we thought G-Shock watches were the ultimate symbols of coolness and wealth!

US$62k diamond tiara

Most little girls love to play dress-up and wear a tiara on their head, pretending to be fairy princesses – but it is usually made of cheap plastic and fake gemstones.

When Rapper Kanye West spent US$74,000 on Christmas presents for his firstborn, North, last year, one of the pricey gifts actually included a US$62,000 diamond-encrusted tiara so that "when she plays dress-up she’ll be a real princess".

Wow, little Nori certainly doesn’t really have to put in too much effort during playtime to pretend that she’s living like royalty!

Some parents get a little Pinterest crazy when it comes to planning their little one’s upcoming birthday party, and some will even book chalets, private rooms in restaurants or even a hotel function room.

However, an affluent mother from Shanxi province in China booked not only a hotel event hall, but also a runway and actually coughed up around S$200,000 (US$157,000) on designer threads for her tiny tot to wear at her fashion-themed second birthday party - ranging from Chanel, Dior, Burberry, Louis Vuitton and Prada.

Most average two year old girls are only interested in having Elsa from Frozen, or My Little Ponies, or Peppa Pig at their birthday bash!

Swarovski Crystal studded bathtub

Swarovski Crystal studded bathtub

We can recall the good old days when we were little and how we would share a bath with our sibling in a huge plastic tub which could also be doubled up to soak dirty laundry overnight.

But of course one of the world’s most famous celebrity baby, Blue Ivy Carter, daughter of power couple Jay-Z and Beyoncé, was given a Swarovski Crystal studded pink bathtub for her 1st birthday, to wash off all the glitter from being in the limelight all the time.

The only crystals we’ll ever get to see in our tub are the ones that smell nice and fizz when you add them to water.

Hot pink Bentley Continental GT

Do you remember what you got for your 18th birthday? Was it a new pair of snazzy shoes? Or a cool new watch? Or even a big fat ang pao which you blew in one day on a fun outing with your friends to the zoo?

For her 18th birthday, Singapore Institute of Management undergrad, Audrey Tay received a Bentley Continental GT (which costs between S$850,000 - $900,000) from her generous father, that was even specially customised in her favourite colour – hot pink!

Then for her 20th birthday last year, she traded in the Bentley for a Porsche 911 Turbo – and as for us, we’re still gritting our teeth while forking out $2 for those coin-operated kids’ rides you find at the mall to keep our kids happy.

US$10 million Dubai holiday home

US$10 million Dubai holiday home

When you’re planning your next family holiday, the next step after buying the airplane tickets is to figure out which hotel to book that you won’t have to sell off your kidneys to afford, or perhaps even a reasonably priced AirBnB home which isn’t 10,000km from any places of interest or public transportation.

However, if you are the daughter of Bollywood royalty, Abhishek and Aishwarya, then you will have your very own holiday home waiting for you the next to you travel to Dubai, which is exactly what lucky little Aaradhya Bachchan has to her name now!

We wonder if she’ll let us crash over at her place for the night if we ever happen to be in the area?

Well there you have it – 8 insanely extravagant presents that the rich and famous have given to their pampered children.

We may think that some of them are just plain ridiculous, but we must admit that some of them are pretty cool and we don’t mind receiving one for our next birthday!

What’s the most expensive or lavish gift you gave to your kids? Tell us in the comments below!
