Who is Jacob Ballas?
Have you ever wondered about the man behind the name of the Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden?

Jacob Ballas was born in Iraq in 1921 and grew up in a humble Orthodox Baghdadi family. When he was just a little boy, his family moved to Labuan, a British outpost in Northern Borneo, where his father worked in the textile business. Unfortunately, the family faced some tough times when the rubber market crashed in the late 1920s, and they had to move to Singapore.
Despite the challenges, young Jacob never lost his spirit. He helped his mother sell homemade bread to support the family and attended the Jewish Talmud Torah school in the afternoons. Later, he went to St. Andrew’s School and grew up to become a successful stockbroker.
But what made Jacob Ballas stand out was his big heart. He was known for his generosity and love for helping others. He was such an important figure in the Jewish community in Singapore that he was considered one of its pillars.
When he passed away in 2000, Jacob Ballas left an incredible legacy. His estate, worth more than S$100 million, was divided equally between charities in Singapore and Israel. And guess what? The beautiful children’s garden at the Singapore Botanic Gardens was named after him to honour his life of giving.
So the next time you and your little ones are exploring the children’s garden, take a moment to remember the kindhearted man who inspired it all. His story is a reminder that no matter where we come from, we can always make a difference in the lives of others.
