10 things to never say to your kid's teacher

15 Feb, 2014

Here are common phrases we try to tell our kid's teachers, but never seem to work, find out why.

\"My son gets bored in class\"

\"My son gets bored in class\"

This is a statement that a teacher could easily take offence to. A teacher tries their best to encourage kids to learn. A kid being bored in class, is not really something a teacher can take care of.
\"Is my kid working hard?\"

\"Is my kid working hard?\"

This is a very subjective question, a teacher would not know your idea of \"working hard\". So if would be difficult for your kid\'s teacher to judge this on your terms. You won\'t be able to receive an accurate response to this question.
\"My child did not lie about handing in the paper\"

\"My child did not lie about handing in the paper\"

It is hard when you hear that your kid hasn\'t handed in the homework or hasn\'t done something they needed to for school. So your immediate reaction is to deny, and defend. However, it is important to be open minded and look at the case from all angles.
\"You didn\'t assign enough homework, my son is falling behind\"

\"You didn\'t assign enough homework, my son is falling behind\"

Blaming the lack of homework for your kid\'s lack of progress could be offensive to a teacher. A teacher assigns as much homework as is required, and teaches the material required, so if a kid is falling behind, it is not fair to blame the teacher.
\"Can you suggest a tutor?\"

\"Can you suggest a tutor?\"

Asking this to a teacher, will make the teacher feel as though they are not fulfilling their job. If you feel your kid needs tutoring after school, it is best to ask your teacher what your kid needs to do to improve rather than who your kid\'s supplementary teacher should be.
\"You should do this instead of that\"

\"You should do this instead of that\"

Although you think you may be helping, your kid\'s teacher could take it the wrong way and feel as though you are trying to tell them how to do their job. Soft suggestions could be accepted, but saying \"this is better than that\" is not helpful to a teacher.
\"Why did my daughter receive this grade?\"

\"Why did my daughter receive this grade?\"

Rather than taking this question straight to the teacher, you should ask your kid to find out why. If your kid is unable to find out, you should approach the teacher. The best way to frame the question is \"what can we do to bring up my daughter\'s math grade?\"
\"We are going on vacation, could you put together some worksheets?

\"We are going on vacation, could you put together some worksheets?

Although it seems like your doing the right thing for your kid, your kid\'s teacher could actually take offence. It would seem as though a couple of work sheets could replace your kid\'s teacher.
\"Please let my kid re-take the test\"

\"Please let my kid re-take the test\"

Teachers are not able to bend rules, so how much ever you insist that your kid deserves a second chance, your kid\'s teacher will be unable to help you.
\"Dear Ms....?\"

\"Dear Ms....?\"

A full-time teacher has more than 100 students, and sending an email about your queries may not get you your response. The best way to find out what you need to know, is to see the teacher in person.
