Dr Steven Zeisel is a nutrition expert at the University of North Carolina. He said that the little-known essential nutrient choline could be a key to human brain development. Unfortunately, a lot of people are not getting enough to it in the first few years of their life.

In one of his studies, Dr Steven said that the nutrient is crucial in brain development. Aside from that, he also noted that the onus falls on the mother to pass it through her child. Mum can pass it through the baby, whether while carrying the baby or through her breast milk after birth.
Most soon-to-be parents don’t know why choline is essential for mums. Concerning this, children who do not receive enough chlorine in the first three years of their life have negative impacts. It includes scoring worse on cognitive tests and often having worse attention spans than their peers.
First 1,000 Days of Life
Dr Steven explains that the first 1,000 days of a person’s life are when the brain forms. In this particular period, choline is the primary key to ensuring that a person’s brain develops properly.
The absence of key development will likely affect the child for the rest of their life. According to Dr Steven Zeisel,
“If there is poor development in those early parts of life, then the brain doesn’t develop properly, and cognition… at seven years of age is worse.”
Because of this, most 15-year-olds end up struggling with their school performance. That’s how failing to gain enough choline affects our kids’ development.
The stem cells that form the brain need choline in a critical development period. Choline’s absence in the crucial development period will affect the usual formation of brain structure. Aside from that, it is saddening that “after that, the cognition isn’t as ever good.”
Furthermore, Dr Steven added that children who do not receive enough choline in their early years are more likely to suffer cleft palate. Nutrients are essential to children. It could also help mitigate some of the damage youngsters face from fetal alcohol syndrome.
The Link Between Nutrient and Brain Function

There is a relatively recent discovery that the first link between nutrients and brain function was made in 1998. Unfortunately, the Food and Drug Administration failed to set recommended daily intake levels for pregnant women until 2016.
As a result, many prenatal vitamins did not include the vital substance in their ingredient list until recently. Paediatricians aim to have Choline be included in the most common multivitamins for pregnant women.
Mums Must Eat Eggs for an Important Nutrient
Aside from prenatal vitamins, another way to get choline is through food. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) puts together a guide for the amount of choline present in everyday foods.
Experts say that pregnant women should receive at least 450 milligrams (mg) of the nutrient daily. The ideal amount of nutrients should women take each day is somewhere around 900 mg.
Eggs are the greatest source of choline. According to the USDA reporting, 100 grams of a whole egg can provide 250 mg of choline. “One egg alone,” says Dr Steven, “contains around 150 mg.” This suggests that a pregnant woman can meet her nutritional needs by eating three eggs per day.
Some people do not eat as many eggs not as they were in the past because they are concerned about high cholesterol. If you are worried about cholesterol, worry no more. There are still other options to get daily choline intake.
